GLSS 360 Winged Sprints this Saturday, July 13 Stock Car Throwdown purse grows to $11,109 to win

By Greg Hildebrand

PLYMOUTH—Three out the four A features were able to run the full scheduled length before the rains forced the non-wing 600 feature to be moved to this Saturday night. This week’s big news was the $11,109 to win, $500 to start, for Super Sports event scheduled for July 13. The race will feature over $34,000 total purse with a 24 car 50 lap feature and a $400 to win $100 to start for non-starters. Look for additional information about this must see event in coming weeks.
Saturday night the UMP-Modifieds were slightly delayed in taking the green flag as a light rain watered the track. The modifieds used every inch of the clay track for an action packed race that kept a lot of the fans from heading for the exits in the light rain. The usual top caliber talent was present with Ryan Cripe, Dylan Woodling and Derek Losh picking up heat wins earlier in the evening.
The A feature had Tony Anderson starting on the pole with Dillon Nusbaum along side at the green flag. Right from the start there was continued two and three wide racing. Anderson was running the low side with Losh working the cushion lap after lap. Four times Losh was able to work past Anderson only to have a yellow flag come out and he would have to give the spot back. Each time it would take Losh several laps to work his way up and laps were disappearing. While these two battled at the front, Zeke McKenzie was now up to third and it became a three car race at the front. Dylan Woodling started forth, finished forth but he was not far out of the lead at any one time.
With laps running out Frank Marshall hooked up on the cushion and came roaring to the front making it a legitimate five car race for the lead. With four laps remaining a yellow came out and Losh was finally able to keep the lead he had gotten 2 laps previously. It wasn’t long on the restart and Marshall was back on the cushion and coming to the lead with a big head of steam when he just ran out of cushion clipped the wall with enough force to break an upper A arm and watched the last couple laps from the infield.
Losh held onto the win followed closely by Anderson, McKenzie and Woodling. Hard charger would have to go to Defiance Ohio’s Hillard Miller who finished eighth after starting in the 19th and final spot or the A feature.
Losh maintains his lead in the points race but McKenzie and Marshall are within striking distance only 15 and 27 points behind.
Super Sports also had a close feature with only Travis Wolford picking up the win from his front row starting spot with pole starter Kody Conner finishing second and Michael Clark starting third and finishing third. Clark was driving for an injured Shaun Wiltjer. Wiltjer injured his hand in a non-racing related accident and will probably be missing from the line-up for six to eight weeks. There has been no final word on how much the Wiltjer number one Camaro will be piloted by Clark but look for an announcement soon.
Ron Wilkes the points leader finished just off the podium from his fifth starting spot. The big mover in the Super Streets would be Bob Mclean from 18th to a top ten finish in ninth. Wolford moved to second in the points race with Calvin Peek Jr. sitting in third.
The CSR Sprints were back in action with a couple of additional entires. Seven cars took the green flag with Andrew Cockman making his debut after racing in the non-wing 600s for the past several years. Keith Ousley also returned for the night after racing earlier this season.
Eric Saunders picked up the heat and the feature win running up on the cushion and staying out of trouble. He was followed by the points leader John Gurley in the 3G and Jack James rounded out the podium.
This week at the Playground of Power the Great Lakes Super Sprints bring their 360 cu in winged sprints into town. Look for a couple of the current CSR Sprint drivers to race with the GLSS regulars. A couple of those regulars were CSR Sprint regulars the past couple of years. Plymouth’s Zane Devault, Warsaw’s Micheal Summers and Lakeville’s Garrett Saunders.
This Saturday will also have twin features for the Non-Wing 600s because of the rain shortened event last Saturday. UMP Mods and Thunder Stocks will be on the card for Saturday with Hot Laps scheduled for 6 p.m. and the Green Flag racing starting at 7 p.m.
