Hartford, MI – Coming into championship night at Hartford Motor Speedway’s $5000 to win Dealer’s Choice Jacob Poel trailed point leader Mark Anderson by 5 points in the series championships point race. The Spring Lake, MI driver had to finish four spots ahead of Anderson to take over the top spot and win the tour’s inaugural championship. With 66 of the best modified drivers in the Midwest on hand for the mega event the task was not going to be an easy one. The night started off with a bad pill draw relegating him to the next to last starting position, right next to Anderson. But that was where the bad luck ended. Poel went on to win his stacked heat race putting him on the pole for the A Main. Pole then dominated the 30 lap event leading flag to flag to pick up his second tour win and the championship in the process. By winning the race and the championship Poel took home $9000 on cash and prizes.

Jacob Poel and Bub Patrick led the field to green with Poel jumping to the lead followed closely by Ken Schrader and Curt Spaulding. The races first caution would fly before the first lap could be completed. The ten car pileup collected point leader Mark Anderson.

On the restart Poel once again jumped out to the lead with Schrader following in second. By lap 5 Poel was checking out on the field. Caution on lap 7 once again closed the field on Poel’s bumper for the restart. Once back under green Poel pulled rocketed away from the field while Schrader and Spaulding battled for second.

On lap 9 Schrader secured the runner up spot from Spaulding and set out to reel in Poel. By the halfway point Poel had developed almost a full straight lead on Schrader and looked unstoppable. With the leader working traffic the battle for third heated up as Spaulding began getting a challenge from Aaron Morey and Hartford Motor Speedway UMP Modified champion Frank Marshall.

Spaulding and Morey raced side by side for multiple laps with Spaulding able to hold off Morey at the line each time. With Spaulding working the high side, Morey working the low groove and Marshall looking to make it three wide, Morey finally cleared Spaulding our of turn 2 on lap 19 with Marshall following for fourth.

By lap 25 Poel was working heavy lapped traffic allowing Schrader to cut the lead in half. But Poel was too strong and would go one to take the $5000 win and the inaugural championship.

Following Poel to the checkers were Ken Schrader, Aaron Morey, Frank Marshall and Curt Spaulding. Rounding out the top ten were Bub Patrick, Kevin Weaver, Scott Orr, Dan DeLong and Randy Woodling.

The $5000 was the largest payout in Michigan modified history. After the event the top thirty were honored in an awards ceremony where they received their championship point fund monies and product certificates. Poel collected $3000 for winning the championship and also received a $1000 certificate from Dart Machinery. Mark Anderson finished second and collected $2,000 in points money with Aaron Morey finishing third and collecting $1,000 in points money. In total Michigan Dirt Cup paid out over $15,000 in points funds money and prizes to the top 30 drivers of tour Saturday night.

Heat race winners were Andy Sprague, Bub Patrick, Jacob Poel, Ken Schrader, Curt Spalding and Randy Woodling.

B Main winners were Jeff Sayles, Mark Anderson and Todd Fuetz.

The Michigan Dirt Cup officials would like to thank Ken Schrader for bringing out his Breast Cancer Awareness car and competing with the MDC regulars. Officials would also like to thank all the competitors and sponsors that made the inaugural season such a success.
