(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway opened for practice on Wednesday, March 28. Approximately 60 cars took to the new track surface on the 1/5 mile dirt oval. A large crowd of spectators took advantage of the free admission on the grandstand side to get a sample of what the Speedway has to offer for 2007. All in attendance gave track staff and management “thumbs up” reviews on the improvements completed so far. Drivers were impressed with the improved banking and the overall track condition. Grandstand spectators commented that changes were noticeable almost from the moment they stepped through the gates.
The new, improved Macon Speedway opens for the 2007 racing season on Saturday, March 31. Work crews have spent long hours completing renovations and repairs at the Speedway. Gates will open Saturday at 5:00 PM and racing will start promptly at 7:00 PM. Fans are encouraged to come early to see the Home Depot #20 car driven by two-time NASCAR champion (and Macon Speedway co-owner) Tony Stewart. Stewart’s car will be on display for fan viewing and pictures from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Fans visiting Macon Speedway will experience some of the fastest, action-packed short track racing in the region. Weekly racing at Macon Speedway features five UMP sanctioned divisions: Late Model, Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock and Hornet. New for 2007 is the addition of the C.A.R.S. Late Models. Macon Speedway has been home to many of the top racers in the country today.
NASCAR Stars Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Macon Speedway in January of 2007.
