Haubstadt, IN. August 14, 2005. The races at Tri-State Speedway Sunday night were rained out in progress. All three Mid- American Winged Sprint Car heats had been completed. The third UMP Modified heat was also nearing conclusion when wind and rain moved in over the speedway sending fans toward the exits.
Although fans were advised to wait in their cars for official notification of any cancellation, the pouring rain continued. Those that remained were soon watching a steady line of racecar trailers leaving the saturated grounds.
Heat races for the winged sprints were won by Tom Busch of Bedford, IN., Curt Trainer of Kokomo, IN, and Tim Engler of
Princeton, IN. Tim Engler charged ahead to nearly a straightaway
lead over Kelly Kinser in the final heat. All the sprint heats were completed under green flag conditions. Twenty top drivers from five states were on hand to compete despite an unpredictable weather forecast.
Officials were aware of changing weather conditions and storm warnings. In an effort to speed the show up and somehow beat the rain, all preliminary heats were reduced to eight laps. The six events held were completed in less than 45 minutes to no avail. It rained even earlier than first predicted.
The third heat in the UMP Modified class was red flagged as
track conditions became unfavorable. Ronnie Falloway of Owensboro,
KY, led Jay Jones and Robert Smith back to the pits. The final heat was also slowed by two cautions due to wrecking cars. The other two heat races were won by Scott Clippenger of Newburgh, IN, and Everett Bradham of Olney, IL. Damon Fortune and Mark Cole were runner-ups in the two respective heats.
On September 4th of Labor Day weekend Tri-State Speedway will present the Midwest Sprints, the Northern All-Star Late Models, and the UMP Modifieds. That will be a Sunday night program.
