ST MARYS, Ohio (Sept. 4, 2017) – Josh Richards scored a top-five finish and earned the Miller Welders Fast-Time Award Sunday at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, West Virginia.
The prestigious Hillbilly 100 began with hot laps and qualifying. Richards and crew unloaded and the No.1 machine was fast from the start, turning the quickest circuits overall in both hot laps and qualifying. His first-place qualifying effort lined him up on the pole for Heat Race 1. At the drop of the green flag, Richards got a little too high going into Turn 1 and was forced to get out of the throttle causing him to slip back to fourth. From that point on Richards was on a mission to get back to the front and was up to third at Lap 3 and running in second on Lap 8. With seven laps remaining in the 15-lap event, the 29-year-old-driver began working the high-side and on Lap 13 he took command of the race leading the final two laps en route to his heat race win. Richards' heat race victory guaranteed him the top starting spot for the night’s A-Main.
Having to start on the less-dominant bottom-side of the race track, Richards slipped back to second on the initial circuit of the 100-lap event before he was able to make his way to the top-groove on Lap 2. The West Virginia native maintained his position for the next 67 laps enduring numerous caution periods and contending with lapped traffic. As the laps wore on, the track began to rubber and Richards started to struggle with a tight race car. On Lap 70 he slipped to third and as the tight-condition progressed he fell to fourth on Lap 84. Just two laps later the 12th and final caution flag of the night flew and Richards was again forced to start on the low-side. On the ensuing restart, he slipped to fifth before making his way back to the top of the track. The Best Performance Motorsports driver gave it all he had in the final laps pulling alongside the fourth-place car of Don O’Neal on multiple occasions. Though he was unable to complete the pass, Richards brought home a solid fifth-place finish.
Richards’ top-five finish allowed him to remain first in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point standings, 130 points ahead of second-place Tim McCreadie.
The Best Performance Motorsports team is scheduled to return to action Sept.14-16 for the Late Model Nationals at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway.

We were really good in qualifying and during our heat race. I made a few adjustments for the Feature and I didn’t anticipate the track changing as much as it did. We ended up fighting a tight condition as the night progressed and the track took more rubber. I’m proud of my Best Performance Motorsports team and I’m really looking forward to going to Knoxville (Raceway).”
