DUNDEE, N.Y. (Oct. 21) – Gary Roberts held off numerous challenges to score the $500 IMCA Modified win in round seven of the World Products Empire State Series at Black Rock Speedway Friday evening.
Roberts started outside Jerry Lobdell Jr. on the front row. Lobdell had the early advantage but a quick caution for a mid-pack scramble in turn one brought out the yellow.
Roberts got the jump on the restart while Lobdell kept up the pressure with Rich Karlnoski and K.C. Cole in tow. Mechanical problems, however, ended Lobdell’s night on lap seven.
J.J. Courcy, Karlnoski and Chris Fleming took up the challenge from that point. Courcy tried in¬side and out but couldn’t unseat Roberts. Karlnoski then spun, which allowed Fleming to make it a three car battle for the lead.
Fleming got by Courcy and battled Roberts for the front spot but Roberts was up to the task and held the position. Disaster almost ended Roberts’ night on lap 22 when the lapped car of Daniel Bur¬man came off the wall in turn four and made contact with the leader.
Roberts was able to hold onto the lead and went on to score his second career Empire State Se¬ries win, complimenting the well-prepared and well-lit clay oval.
Courcy came in second and said it “felt like a win.” Fleming, Kevan Cook and point leader Eddie Sites rounded out the top five.
The North Country Custom rookie of the race award went to Mike Van Dyke as the highest finish¬ing rookie. The MR Graphix hard charger award went to Eddie Sites while the random draw award went to Cook.
The final event in the 10th annual series is this Saturday, Oct. 29 at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood.
IMCA Modifieds return to Dundee for a $1,000 to win Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualify¬ing event during The Big One special Saturday, Nov. 5.
