BAYTOWN, Texas (Nov. 20) – Rodney Sanders knows how to shine when the big money is on the line.
Saturday night at the Houston Raceway Park, the 21-year-old from Happy, Texas, captured the biggest USMTS win of his career as he topped the final night of the 4th Annual Texas Winter Nationals and pocketed the $5,000 top prize.
It was the third high-dollar victory for Sanders in the last two months. In September, he topped a $12,000-to-win race in Fountain City, Wis., and just two weeks ago beat 98 other drivers in Las Cruces, N.M., to take home a $10,000 paycheck.
As one of the top eight qualifiers all three nights, Sanders made the redraw all three nights at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Baytown, Texas, and drew the outside front row starting spot all three nights.
He led the first seven laps Thursday before settling for a runner-up finish behind Zack VanderBeek. On Friday, he held on for a fourth-place finish as VanderBeek won his second main event in as many nights.
But on Saturday night it was all Sanders as “The Rocket” ran away from polesitter Kelly Shryock at the drop of the green flag and proceeded to lead all 40 laps without being challenged.
“We missed the setup on Friday and the car was pretty tight,” Sanders said Saturday night after his second USMTS Southern Series win of the 2010 campaign. “The car was perfect tonight and this new Geddes Racing Engine is unbelievable.”
While he came up short in his quest for a weekend sweep, VanderBeek earned a second-place finish in Saturday’s finale and nipped Sanders in total earnings for the weekend, $8,000 to $7,500.
Jason Hughes came into the night having already clinched his third straight USMTS Southern Series crown and powered to a third-place finish in the WIX Filters “A” Main.
Randy Timms came from the 16th starting spot to finish fourth and garner his second PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award in as many nights while Dereck Ramirez notched his best finish of the season by taking the fifth position.
Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Clyde Dunn Jr., Ryan Gustin, Chris Brown, Shryock and Bobby Malchus.
Timms wound up second in the final USMTS Southern Series points standings while Sanders and Shryock ended up with the same points in third. Sanders, however, wins the tie-breaker by virtue of his two wins to Shryock’s one.
Ryan Gustin finished sixth in the final standings, followed by Morgan Bagley, Bumper Jones, Shane Hebert, Steve Holzkamper and Tommy Weder Jr.
In the “Just Say Yes” Dustin Duncan Memorial Rookie of the Year battle, Tracy Denby Jr. came out on top after starting the weekend ranked third. Rory Jordan claimed runner-up honors among rookie driver candidates while Johnny Scott, Ben Stephens and Troy Seidl rounded out the top five.
Mullins Race Engines duplicated the feat they performed in the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour by capturing the COMP Cams Engine Builder of the Year Award while the Chassis Builders Championship also went to Hughes Racing Chassis in both series.
Hughes added the season-long WIX Filters Lap Leader Award to his trophy case while Gustin captured the AFCO Pole Award during the 16-race USMTS Southern Series grind.
Saturday’s event put the wraps on the 2010 campaign, but the USMTS Modifieds will return to the Houston Raceway Park in less than three months to kickoff the 2011 racing season on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-19.

Saturday night at the Houston Raceway Park, the 21-year-old from Happy, Texas, captured the biggest USMTS win of his career as he topped the final night of the 4th Annual Texas Winter Nationals and pocketed the $5,000 top prize.
It was the third high-dollar victory for Sanders in the last two months. In September, he topped a $12,000-to-win race in Fountain City, Wis., and just two weeks ago beat 98 other drivers in Las Cruces, N.M., to take home a $10,000 paycheck.
As one of the top eight qualifiers all three nights, Sanders made the redraw all three nights at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Baytown, Texas, and drew the outside front row starting spot all three nights.
He led the first seven laps Thursday before settling for a runner-up finish behind Zack VanderBeek. On Friday, he held on for a fourth-place finish as VanderBeek won his second main event in as many nights.
But on Saturday night it was all Sanders as “The Rocket” ran away from polesitter Kelly Shryock at the drop of the green flag and proceeded to lead all 40 laps without being challenged.
“We missed the setup on Friday and the car was pretty tight,” Sanders said Saturday night after his second USMTS Southern Series win of the 2010 campaign. “The car was perfect tonight and this new Geddes Racing Engine is unbelievable.”
While he came up short in his quest for a weekend sweep, VanderBeek earned a second-place finish in Saturday’s finale and nipped Sanders in total earnings for the weekend, $8,000 to $7,500.
Jason Hughes came into the night having already clinched his third straight USMTS Southern Series crown and powered to a third-place finish in the WIX Filters “A” Main.
Randy Timms came from the 16th starting spot to finish fourth and garner his second PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award in as many nights while Dereck Ramirez notched his best finish of the season by taking the fifth position.
Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Clyde Dunn Jr., Ryan Gustin, Chris Brown, Shryock and Bobby Malchus.
Timms wound up second in the final USMTS Southern Series points standings while Sanders and Shryock ended up with the same points in third. Sanders, however, wins the tie-breaker by virtue of his two wins to Shryock’s one.
Ryan Gustin finished sixth in the final standings, followed by Morgan Bagley, Bumper Jones, Shane Hebert, Steve Holzkamper and Tommy Weder Jr.
In the “Just Say Yes” Dustin Duncan Memorial Rookie of the Year battle, Tracy Denby Jr. came out on top after starting the weekend ranked third. Rory Jordan claimed runner-up honors among rookie driver candidates while Johnny Scott, Ben Stephens and Troy Seidl rounded out the top five.
Mullins Race Engines duplicated the feat they performed in the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour by capturing the COMP Cams Engine Builder of the Year Award while the Chassis Builders Championship also went to Hughes Racing Chassis in both series.
Hughes added the season-long WIX Filters Lap Leader Award to his trophy case while Gustin captured the AFCO Pole Award during the 16-race USMTS Southern Series grind.
Saturday’s event put the wraps on the 2010 campaign, but the USMTS Modifieds will return to the Houston Raceway Park in less than three months to kickoff the 2011 racing season on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-19.
