Inside Line Promotions - TULARE, Calif. (May 19, 2014) - Dominic Scelzi rallied to record his third top 10 of the season last Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.
The night started on the wrong note as Scelzi went out early for qualifying and timed in 20[sup]th[/sup] quickest.
"We had a little early pill draw and were just a little snug for the race track," he said. "That put us behind the eight ball early."
Scelzi missed the heat race inversion and started seventh in his heat.
"We were able to race with the guys in front of us," he said. "We got better as the race went on. I just about got fifth, but couldn't quite clear the pass."
Scelzi ended with a sixth-place result to miss a lock-in position by one spot. That sent him to the B Main, which he started on the outside of the third row.
"We figured we'd throw something new at it," he said. "We got going really good and the track was really, really slick. You couldn't really run the fence because it was too far around and too slow."
Scelzi maneuvered to a third-place finish in the B Main to transfer to the main event, which he started on the outside of the 10[sup]th[/sup] row.
"In the first four laps we were up to eighth," he said. "We just ran right through the middle."
However, the track began to take rubber on the bottom following a restart around Lap 5 and passing was at a premium for the remainder of the race. Scelzi ended with a ninth-place result.
"I'm actually really disappointed in our run," he said. "We were a lot better the last time we were there. It was looking like in the main event we were going to pass a lot of cars. From where we had to start and the track conditions, I'm not disappointed with it. But I'm definitely not happy with how we ran."
Scelzi, who ranks ninth in the King of the West championship standings, will return to action with the series on June 6 at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., for the 2[sup]nd[/sup] annual David Tarter Memorial and on June 7 at Marysville Raceway Park in Marysville, Calif.
