(BRIGHT, INDIANA) Dirt Late Model driver Scott James, of Bright, Indiana, captured the biggest win of his racing career last Friday night in a Northern AllStars Late Model Series (NALMS) event at the Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, KY. After winning his heat race to give him an outside second row starting position for the 50-lap main event, “The Silver Shark” shadowed early race leader Ray Cook and then held off a hard-charging Don O’Neal to pocket the $10,000 top prize. Not only was the $10,000 payday Scott’s biggest of his racing career, but to win the 1st Annual ‘Early Bird Classic’ with the quality of drivers present, also meant a lot to Scott.
“Man, that was a great race and a great win for our team,” stated James after his win on Friday night. “We had a heck of a battle with (Don) O’Neal at the end and he definitely made us earn the win. He tried several slidejobs on me, but I was able to hold my line and keep him behind me. It feels great to finally get over the hump and win one of these $10,000 shows, especially with the number of quality cars here tonight. I just have to thank all my sponsors and family that have been behind me all of these years. Hopefully, we can win several more of these big shows in the near future!”
Scott’s night on Saturday was not nearly as memorable as the previous night.
The team came into the night hoping to claim another $10,000 to win, NALMS feature event at the Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, TN, but that was not to be. Scott qualified his Powell Motorsports / Baylor Trucking #83 Rocket / Dargie Grand Prix for the feature event by finishing fourth in his heat race. In the feature, Scott had advanced seven spots from his fifteenth starting position when he tangled with Don O’Neal under caution.
The damage to the #83 machine was substantial and Scott had to retire from the event. The incident relegated Scott to a seventeenth place finish.
“We chased the track all night at Clarksville on Saturday, and finally hit it right for the feature,” said Scott in a telephone conversation today.
“We were up to eighth or so and there was a caution. I was riding about five car lengths behind (Don) O’Neal under caution and I glanced to look at a car that drove up beside of me. When I looked back ahead, O’Neal was trying to exit the track off of turn two and was sitting right in front of me. I hit him pretty hard and it tore up our radiator and the whole front end. The thing about it is that they (the track officials) told everyone in the driver’s meeting not to exit the track that way because they had previously had the same problem. I know he (O’Neal) was at the meeting, so I don’t know what he was thinking.”
The Scott James Motorsports team will be taking a few weeks off and will hit the track next on Friday night, March 25 at the Florence Speedway in Union, KY. A $3,000 O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass (BoB) Series event is scheduled for that night on the ½-mile, high-banked oval near Cincinnati.
