KILGORE, Texas (June 12) – It was a night of firsts Saturday as the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series made its debut at the Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, for Round 3 of the 4th Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek.

Several inches of rain in the days leading up to the event made for a bumpy surface around the big, fast high-banked half-mile dirt oval, but neither the track nor the pressure of battling the top dirt Modified drivers in America phased Johnny Scott as he steered his #1st ASI-powered Hughes Chassis to his career-first victory in USMTS competition.

Starting fourth on the grid, defending series champ and current points leader Jason Hughes darted to the front of the field at the drop of the green flag. By the fourth lap, Friday’s winner Ryan Gustin was challenging Hughes – the winner of Thursday’s Speedweek opener.

Gustin’s aggressiveness proved to be a bit too much on lap 5 as he tagged the wall in the third turn and was forced out of the race with a damaged machine.

Hughes’ luck wasn’t much better. Leading the race with 11 laps in the books, faulty plug wires doomed the Westville, Okla., pilot and forced him to retire from the race.

Nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock inherited the top spot but his opportunity for a victory was dashed on lap 19 when a broken j-bar sidelined the 2007 USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series titleist.

Scott, who qualified for the main event by winning the second “B” Main and started 14th, took the reigns from Shryock and was flawless over the final six laps as he sailed to the checkered flag with a comfortable margin over runner-up Steve Whiteaker Jr., who raced his way into contention after starting 11th on the 24-car grid.

The win was worth $2,000 to the 20-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., and also propelled him into the lead of the Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year points standings.

John O Whittington came from 18th to finish third, with Randy Timms grabbing fourth ahead of Shane Hebert. Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Jason Armstrong, Steve Holzkamper, P.J. Egbert, Wes Armstrong and Shryock.

Hughes continues atop the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series standings with a 156-point cushion (1131 to 975) over Shryock. Timms remains third with 917 markers, followed by Rodney Sanders (876), Morgan Bagley (865), Bumper Jones (825), Holzkamper (805), Gustin (765), Whittington (750) and Whiteaker (726).

THREE DOWN, ONE TO GO …
Tomorrow (Sunday, June 13) will find the tireless touring titans at Gene Boyter’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La. In the first-ever event here in 2008, Duke Whiseant took home the hardware in his career-first USMTS start over Johnny Bone Jr., Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder Jr. and Steve Holzkamper. Hughes is the defending race winner.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstand gates swing open at 5, hot laps take to the track at 6:30 and the racing action kicks off at 7 p.m.

Limited Mods will be racing for $400 to win and $40 to start while Factory Stocks will be racing for $300 to win and $40 to start.

The Ark-La-Tex Speedway a 1/4-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 0.6 mile south of SR 2 on SR 1, then 0.7 mile west on Airport Rd., then 2.2 miles south on Boyter Lane Rd.

At the end of this weekend’s quadruple-header, the top 10 in points – plus all other drivers with perfect attendance in the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series – will be qualified for the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's General Stores National Championship, which begins Aug. 12 and culminates Sept. 22-25 with the 12th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree.
