This Friday, September 19, PIR wraps up 2008 with Season Championship races. Seven divisions will be represented: the UMP Late Models, Modifieds, Crate Late Models, Street Stocks, and Warriors, along with the Super Cell Mini Sprints and the Vintage Racers.

2008 point championships will be decided Friday. Results of Friday’s racing will decide the champion in several PIR divisions.

In the Late Model division, Paducah’s Dylan Thompson has only a 12-point lead over another Paducah driver, Jeff Walston.

Paducah’s Todd Miller has just a 16-point cushion over Hazel’s Justin Houston in the Modified division.

Tait Davenport of Paducah has probably amassed enough points to assure him the championship in the Pro (Crate) Late Model class. He enjoys a 58-point advantage over Calvert City’s Troy English.

With his 86-point lead, Poncho Elder of Paducah has assured himself the Street Stock championship over second place Mike Watson of West Paducah.

The closest battle for the 2008 championship will be in the Warrior division where two youngsters are at the top of the standings. Just eight points separate Gilbertsville’s Keaton Downing and Calvert City’s Jeffrey Bailey.

For the second week in a row, at intermission, PIR drivers will use their helmets to collect donations from fans in the grandstands for Kenny Biro, a Midwest Sprint Car driver from Bargersville, IN, injured at PIR August 1. Last Friday nearly $1200 was collected. All funds from both Friday night collections will be used to help defray the enormous expense of Biro’s recovery from head injuries sustained in the accident.

Adult grandstand admission is $10, children 12 and under are admitted free. The grandstand ticket office and gate open at 5 PM. Pit passes are $25, minor releases required. The pit gate opens at 4. Racing begins at 7:30.

NASCAR Stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr, Ken Schrader, and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Paducah International Raceway in November of 2005. Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart joined the trio of co-owners as a partner in September of 2006. In 2008 the 3/8th mile high-banked oval will host several high profile events including NASCAR Nights of Stars, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars, the USA World 50, and the Tri-Track Challenge. PIR races will resume racing every Friday night in the spring of 2009. PIR is located off Interstate 24 at exit 11 in Paducah, Kentucky. For more information call the PIR hotline at (270) 448-4PIR or the track at (270) 898-SHOW (7469). Check out the PIR Website at www.paducahinternationalraceway.com or www.paducahracing.com.
