The 2008 Season Championship race night was a much anticipated event to end the points racing season at Quincy Raceways in the Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing Series and it was a night to remember as two divisions Track Points Champions were decided by one point, one division ended in a tie broken by feature event wins and one that had a twenty five point margin.
Jason Frankel went into the night Budweiser J&J Steel IMCA Late Model division with a twenty three point margin over fourteen time Track Champion Mark Burgtorf and unless disaster struck the track points championship was all wrapped up. Frankel took his heat race win and then proceeded to blast through the field from his fifth row starting spot to take the win in the Season Championship feature event win. Veteran Jerry Weisenberger took the lead and the drop of the green flag and led the first eight laps but gave the lead up to Justin Reed on the ninth lap. Reed then pulled to a decided advantage until Frankel got through the traffic and ran him down on the twenty seventh lap. Frankel squeaked by Reed lead and went on to take a slim 1.1 second win at the checkered flag. Reed settled for second followed by Mark Burgtorf in third, Denny Woodworth in fourth and Robbie Warner in fifth. Jason Perry and Burgtorf won the other two heat races. Mark Burgtorf scored the $500 win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash Finale, a twenty lap event for the top ten in trophy dash points. Justin Reed grabbed second followed by Matt Bailey in third, Jason Frankel in fourth and Robby Warner in fifth.
The Miller Lite Modified division went into the evening’s activities with a three way points battle for the Track Points Championship on the line. Tony Dunker went into the evening with a four point margin over Michael Long followed by rookie sensation, Steven DeLonjay on one point back of Long. Dunker and DeLonjay scored one point in the heat races while Long scored two in his heat setting up an even closer battle going into the Season Championship feature event. Long started in the sixth row with DeLonjay and Dunker in row five. Adam Birck led the first five laps as Justin Reed charged through the traffic to take over the lead on the sixth lap. Reed then led the field through two caution periods and sixteen laps. A lap nineteen yellow flag brought Long to Reed’s rear bumper while Dunker was struggling back in the eighth spot on the restart. Reed held Long at bay until lap twenty two when Long charged by to take the lead. Long then pulled to a 2.2 second advantage as the checkered flag fell on lap twenty five over Reed with DeLonjay and Dunker rallying during the last five laps to take third and fifth with Robbie Reed in fourth. The final points standing found Long, the 2007 Modified Track Points Champion with a one point advantage over Dunker and four over DeLonjay. Wyatt Lance, Jared Schlipman and Vance Wilson took the heat race wins. Long drew the pole spot for the Advance Trading Trophy Dash Finale and used it to his advantage to take a comfortable $300 win over Dunker in second followed by Robbie Reed in third, David Wietholder in fourth and Justin Reed in fifth.
The Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Car points battle showed Chris Wibbell up by three markers over Jeff Mueller going into the final event of the points racing season. Mueller and Wibbell started side by side in the fifth row of the Season Championship feature event, giving them the challenge to get through the field quickly to settle the Track Points Championship. Mueller used the bottom side in the early laps to clear traffic in seven laps to take the lead while Wibbell had a much harder time getting through the competition. Mueller battled with David Wietholder over the final fourteen laps holding a slim 1.1 second lead when the checkered flag fell. Wibbell managed to get to the fourth spot when the checkered flag fell which put Mueller and Wibbell into a 626 point tie as the points were tallied up. Mueller’s nine feature wins verses Wibbell’s one feature win broke the tie giving the inaugural IMCA Track Points Championship to Mueller. The third spot went to Abe Huls and fifth to Doug Huls. Abe Huls and Sarah Woodhurst took the heat race wins.
The Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock points battle was between Aaron Brocksieck and Wes Mayfield as only five points separated the two going into the Season Championship race night. Brocksieck scored a single point in his heat race while Mayfield picked up two narrowing the margin to four points going into the Season Championship feature event. Mayfield and Brocksieck started the main event side by side in the fifth row with Mayfield finding the going good at the drop of the green flag as he progressed to the second spot following early leader Mike Wiley by the seventh lap as Brocksieck struggled in traffic. Mayfield took the lead from Wiley on the tenth lap and did all he could do in his quest for his first ever Track Points Championship as he cruised to the Season Championship feature event win, but Brocksieck slowly but surely worked his way into the fourth spot at the checkered flag to take the Track Points Title by a mere one point advantage over Mayfield. Jim Powell claimed the second spot followed by Wiley in third and Steve Carlin in fifth. Corrie Eifert and Bobby Anders were the heat race winners.
The points racing may be over at Quincy Raceways for the 2008 season but the quality racing action is not. This Sunday, August 31 is Rick’s Transit Repair Night with the second appearance of the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models in a $2000 to win, $250 to start event. The Miller Lite Modifieds and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stocks will be support classes with feature events paying $500 and $250 to win respectively. The new AFCO KidModz series will be making their initial appearance at Quincy Raceways running both heats and point paying feature events. Pit Gates open at 3, Spectator Gates at 5, Drivers Meeting at 5:45, Hot Laps at 6 and Racing at 6:30pm.
Labor Day Monday, Sept.1 features the largest purse for a Demo Derby in West Central Illinois history as $5000 is the winner’s share of a $16,000 plus purse. The Great American Trailer racing paying $750 to win is also on tap. Pit Gates open at 10am, Spectator Gates at 4 and the Demo Derby starting at 6:00pm. September 7 is Selby Implement Company Night featuring the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders, the Budweiser J&J Steel IMCA Late Models racing for $1000 to win, the Miller Lite Mods for $500 to win and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stocks for $250 to win.
