Champs Fisher, Greer-Askins Successful Defenders!
by Tom Wilson

Warrensburg, Missouri 11/09/02-Five days of turning the inside of a Missouri State Fairgrounds' building into a smooth and tack-fast, 1/8th mile, high-banked dirt oval by promoter Wayne Campbell and Race Director Jimmy Smith, made for a perfect 'opener' for the 5th Annual “Coliseum Indoor Winter Speedway Kart Racing Series” Saturday night in Sedalia, Missouri.
A record 111 karts for an opening night entry tally made for 56 events that were run in just under five hours, intermission included, and all left at 10:10 pm.

Well known karter Mikey Halliburton of Columbia proved he was back at 'full steam' as he captured both the Yeager's Suzuki Stock Light and Paint-Ko Stock Medium feature events.
The double champion in the 2001-2 series, Josh 'Beavis' Fisher from Smithton, moved up a notch to the ER Energy Release Junior 2 Light class and won that first feature with ease. Another defending champ from last year, Sedalia's Delan Greer-Askins in the KDKD “Checkered Flag” Kage Karts, picked up his winning streak right where he put it on hold for the summer.
Youngsters Dylan Timmerman from El Dorado Springs and Fulton's Blake David won top honors in the Anderson Kart Engines Rookie Beginners and Terry's Osage Express Rookie Advanced divisions.
After moving to Russell Karting Specialties' 2-Cycle controlled competition last season, Gladstone's David 'buckaroo' Haansz made it a hands down clean sweep in that class.
Three very interesting new chauffeurs showed up at the start of this year.
From the well-known “Fast” Layne family, Kansas City's Tony Layne, whose father “Fast” Richard Layne just won his sixth “Mighty Modified” championship at Central Missouri Speedway this past season, showed immediately that he had the 'right stuff'. He won both heats in the Busso's AA Muffler Junior 1 Heavy division and then won the 'B' feature event to make the Goody's Steakburgers Junior 1 Light main event. Even though he had bad luck and a hard crunch in the features, he still managed fifth and fourth place finishes from the rear. It was only his fifth overall race night, his first at the Coliseum.
Climbing into a dirt speedway kart for winter competition was I-70 Speedway's asphalt owner and promoter, Brad McDonald.
And a race driver who has run two classes of cars each night for the last two years at his hometown track in Warrensburg, James McMillin, now has an 8m numbered kart to boot.
Kerry King from Shawnee, Ks flipped his kart hard in the Dale's Tow Super Heavy Stock heat, but was able to walk away healthy then return later with a third place finish in the feature.
The racing fans, out for their wintertime 'need for speed', definitely get their attendance money's worth every week, including this coming Saturday night's event #2 of this series..
That, along with the supplied heat in the historic Missouri State Fairgrounds building and the 'Coliseum Karting Concessions' delicious food, fans and competitors always look forward to returning.
Admission to the grandstands for adults is $5, 7 to 10 years old-$3 and under 6 years of age, free. The pit office starts taking sign-ins at 1 p.m., the grandstands are unlocked at 3, hot laps circle at 4 with the first qualifying heat set for 5 pm.
