MESQUITE, Texas (Feb. 17) – Smiley’s Racing Chassis is the new title sponsor for IMCA’s South¬ern SportMod division.
The Mesquite, Texas, company, purchased late last year by Jerrold Howell and still located on the Smiley’s Racing Products campus, will provide portions of the point funds to be paid to top 15 drivers in national standings for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
“Racing is something I’ve always enjoyed doing. This opportunity came up so we bought the com¬pany and took over last November,” explained Howell, who has competed in a Southern SportMod himself. “We really want to emphasize quality in all the Modified, SportMod and Stock Car chassis we make.”
SportMod and Stock house cars will race at Kennedale Speedway Park and 85 Speedway, as well as at specials throughout the season. A Smiley’s Racing Chassis-built house Modified may also join the Texas circuit but the focal point will remain on the SportMod.
“We already sold three SportMod chassis from going to trade shows this year,” Howell said. “We really like the class because it’s affordable. This is a class that comes down to the driver’s ability and not how much you spent. That’s what got us into a Southern SportMod.”
The class will be part of regular race programs at more than 20 tracks in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arizona and Utah this season.
Drivers must display two Smiley’s Racing Chassis decals on their race cars to be eligible for shares of the national point fund. Checks will be distributed during the national awards banquet in Novem¬ber or mailed from the IMCA home office in early December.
"This partnership is a natural match for our Southern SportMod division and SRC has stepped up and shown their commitment by inking a two year deal,” IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. “The chassis shop is completely separate from the parts retailer and logos are different, alt¬hough each will be required on all Southern SportMods."
