Spring Fling a Success

Competition finally made its way to Big River Sand Drags in 2013 with the Spring Fling. A rough start to the season did not deter nearly 10 out-of-state racers from joining in on the fun. With vehicles rolling in from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Ohio to take on the natives in Bonne Terre, even a rough start to the night could not stop these racers from putting on a great show.

With time trials starting a bit late, trouble with the water truck, and an extended driver's meeting, the festivities began over an hour behind schedule. With exception to a rough re-introduction to Port-a-Tree systems during Junior ATV (by yours truly) it was all smooth sailing after that. Prior to competition, it was announced that Gladys Edwards' name on the Wall of Fame had been corrected (to which she was very grateful), and a tear-filled Wall of Fame induction took place honoring the hard-working, multi-talented track official and racer, Josh Varner.

During the driver's meeting, it was decided (with the turnout of racers) that competition would be altered from single elimination with a buyback round to the original (or "old school") double elimination style that Big River Sand Drags had done since its inception. The only difference is that Top Eliminator is still nixed, and has been replaced with 3rd place. Here are the results:

In Junior ATV it was Braidon Schnettgoecke out of Carrollton, IL picking up first place. Hunter Mendenhall out of Ironton won second place with Corbyn Hayes of Arcadia finishing third.

Pro ATV brought in a few new racers as Devon Mason from Bonne Terre won first place, Randy Hayes of Arcadia picked up second place, and Coleby Courtway of Park Hills took third place.

Unlimited ATV saw Randy Hayes take first place as he competed in two classes and only lost one race all night. Second place went to Mike Fulk of Ellisville, and Jason Waller, Jr. out of Bonne Terre picked up third.

Exhibition passes were made throughout the night by John "The Legend" Dreher out of Wentzville, in his F-2 altered, and by Kyle Farwick from Cincinnati, OH in his blown alcohol altered on a Dreher chassis. Making a couple single passes each, they ended with a pro-light duel that saw both cars reach over 100 Miles Per Hour in just 300 foot, as Farwick beat Dreher.

In Competition Eliminator, Hunter Orness of Solon, IA was unbeatable in his silver Jeep as he took first place. Second place went to Kay Dreher from Wentzville, and Cheyenne Hirschelman from Newburgh, IN got third.

Racing will resume at Big River Sand Drags on Saturday, June 22nd with our "Deuces Wild Double Points Spectacular." Racers who have not made it to the track this year can still easily be thrust into the midst of points competition by winning double points, as well as 2 bonus points for any E.T. ending in ".22" during the event. Gates open at 3PM, racer registration closes at 6PM, and racing is slated to start at 7PM. For more information, visit our website at www.BigRiverSandDrags.com.
