(November 15, 2006) – With a record-breaking 19th edition of I-30 Speedway's Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires recently logged into the record books in successful fashion, initial plans for the 20th running of the prestigious event in Little Rock, AR, have already been put into motion.
It was announced during the October 28 STN finale that the stakes will be upped for I-30 Speedway's 20th Annual Short Track Nationals, with the winner's share bumped to $20,000 with all championship feature starters collecting a minimum of $2,000.
"It has been something I've been thinking about for several years now, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Short Track Nationals by paying $20,000 to win and $2,000 to start," according to I-30 Speedway track promoter Tracey Clay. "And now, with the continued increasing support of both the race teams and fans from throughout the country over the past several years, we're able to make that addition to the purse to bring the STN championship feature payout alone to more than $75,000."
Then, last week it was determined that the 20th edition of the fall classic, which takes place atop I-30 Speedway's ¼-mile clay oval October 25-27, 2007, would run under the American Sprint Car Series banner as a National event for the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour. The series will conclude its 2007 season two weeks later with a two-night event at Tampa's East Bay Raceway Park.
"We want to do everything possible to make the 20th Annual Short Track Nationals a major, major happening, and adding the American Sprint Car Series sanction was the next logical step," Clay commented.
ASCS President and founder Emmett Hahn commented that, "We're very proud to be able to add such a highly-respected, prestigious event to the ASCS National Tour in 2007. I-30 Speedway's Short Track Nationals is a tremendous event that every driver out there not only wants to compete in, but really wants to win at some point in his career. The ASCS looks forward to being a part of it next year and for many years to follow."
On October 28, Louisiana's Jason Johnson became the 13th different winner of the storied event, pocketing over $16,000 (including bonus money) by topping a record field of 99 competitors. Johnson added his name to a prestigious list of winners that includes Gary Wright, Tim Montgomery, Paul McMahan, Jason Sides, Mike Ward, Tim Crawley, Wayne Johnson, Pete Butler, Terry Gray and John Gerloff since the event became a 360-ci Sprint Car showcase in 1993. Early renditions of the event were won by Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell.
