28th Stick Elliott Memorial
Gaffney S.C- A passing shower, early in the day was about the only thing that slowed down West Virginia's Steve Shaver during the 28th Stick Elliott Memorial at Cherokee Speedway.
24 cars were on hand for the Beast Series sanctioned event that netted $4,000 to the winner. Shaver was not the fastest car during hot laps as the luck of the draw seen him going out in group one with a heavy race track. As the night went on, Shaver proved he had a car that was going to be in the hunt at the end of the night as he ripped off a lap of 15.444 that earned him the top starting spot for the 40 lap feature event.
Shaver then elected to start outside row number one, and forced Toccoa Ga driver Casey Roberts to start from the pole position. At the drop of the green flag, Roberts pressured the #6 Leroy and Kevin Rumley owned machine around the 3/8 mile speedway, but never got close enough to make a move. "I have always wanted to win this race." stated Shaver " My hats off to the Elliott family, and I am just glad to now be part of it".
Roberts had his hand full with the Beast series points leader Johnny Pursley. Pursley pursued the Roberts machine for the majority of the race, but was able to make his move after a late race restart. Johnny Pursley, Casey Roberts, Chris Madden and Dennis Franklin rounded out the top five.
Dennis "Rambo" Franklin had the large crowd on their feet as he charged back through the field and into the top 5 after having a right rear tire go flat with 12 laps remaining. " I was able to get on the top side and pass 1 or 2 cars every lap. You can make up a ton of time here on the top side. I needed about 5 more laps and we might have had a shot" stated Franklin.
Shaver becomes the 6th different winner of the season, as the Beast series has yet to find it's first repeat winner of the 2012 season. Johnny Pursley was extend his points lead over Casey Roberts to 17 points in the championship hunt.
