CLARKSVILLE, TN – The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series will return to the track where it all began for the series on February 3-4, 2006 for a pair of 40-lap $2,500-to-win events during the Super Bowl of Racing at Golden Isle Speedway in Brunswick, GA. A year has made a big difference for both the series and the race track.
The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series contested its first event ever at Golden Isle Speedway in February of 2005. The series was then known as Crate Racin’ USA with a concept developed by dirt late model car owner Mike Vaughn of Cartersville, GA.
In an effort to make dirt late model racing more affordable, Vaughn came up with a traveling series where the race cars used economic GM Performance engines, sealed at the factory, right out of the crate, and readily available at GM dealerships throughout the country. Since that first event, Crate Racin’ USA has a new marketing partner for 2006 from StormPay.com.
This brought about a name change for the series to the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series. StormPay.com is a globally-recognized leader in online payment processing and free online auction listings. StormPay lives up to its name with “lightning quick e-commerce.” The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series is also lightning quick with the action on the track.
While Vaughn spent the 2005 season developing his new dirt late model series, Golden Isle Speedway owner/promoter Frankie Lloyd was spending his time making his well-known race track a better place to race.
Golden Isle Speedway was a 5/8-mile track with an oil-dirt surface that for many years produced the fastest speeds ever recorded for dirt late models. These race cars with unlimited engines were capable of running over 170 miles per hour at the end of the backstretch. The high-speeds and the surface were not conducive to passing. Lloyd made a change for better racing.
Lloyd brought in red clay, and shortened the track size to ½-mile. In the events run on the new surface of the reconfigured track, three-wide racing was common. Lloyd is anxious to see what the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series will new this February on the new track.
“We had a pretty good race last year, and this year should be even better on the red clay,” Lloyd said. “Crate engines in dirt late models are the up and coming thing, and we’re really looking forward to having the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series at Golden Isle Speedway. I like Mike Vaughn because he is a man of his word. He put on a good show, and we all had a great time last year.”
Vaughn is quick to give Lloyd credit for being instrumental in helping him develop the series.
“Frankie Lloyd was the first promoter to step up to the plate and give this series and the concept behind it a try,” Vaughn said. “He believes in what we’re trying to do with the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series, and he has spent a lot of time and money on the race track to give the fans the best racing he possibly can.”
The pair of 40-lap $2,500-to-win events for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series at Golden Isle Speedway will be events number three and four on the 2006 National Tour Schedule, which StormPay.com officials are still working on.
The 2006 season will open on January 8 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL with $2,500-to-win NeSmith Chevrolet 40 as a part of the 16th Annual Ice Bowl. Round number two will be held at Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS on January 21, 2006 as a part of the 6th Annual Winter Classic.
