Mike Sweeney took his UMP Open Wheel Modified around the red, clay, oval in 14.387 seconds to top the class qualifying runs; only narrowly escaping Randle Sweeney's (182) 14.390 second lap. While Clarksville welcomed Robert C. Coomes (67) during his first lap of qualifying, officials in the staging lane, blinded by the afternoon sun, accidentally let another car out on the track causing a bit of confusion and giving Coomes a couple extra laps. Randle came back out in the Burr # 33 Late Model to set fast time in the UMP class with a 12.849, only one of two times under thirteen seconds. The other was set by Tony Albright (1) in 12.986. Brian Caudle "The R-C Man" (RC1) has set the fast time for Pro Street for the last seven weeks straight, this week with a 14.430.
Timothy Hunter (77) led the Pure Mini Stock heat race to the checkered flag in the first race of the night, after a quick shuffle at the start. The drivers that seemed to have the most fun were David Shepherd (11) and Stan Ferry (1) when they spent the entire race nearly side-by-side, forward & back, looking for fourth place. Shepard got the prize. Dale Phillips (87) put some car lengths between his Street Stock car and the nearest competitor, Don Everett (9), who had Timmy Wilson (29) riding his draft for the duration of the first heat. In the second Street Stock heat, Sam Morgan (D4) tried to keep up with Henry Gibbs (75) when the D4 fell to mechanical failure just before the half way mark. Dorris McCord (45) drove up from the last row to take over second place behind Gibbs taking the checkered flag. Clayton Miller (X15) had his eye on second place in the Open Wheel dash when the car gave him trouble in turn three forcing him to leave the track. Mike Sweeney (25S) reckoned with Randle (182), who nearly caught him just before the crossed flags came out. Mike stayed the course and landed the pole position in the feature. Charles Zimmerman (93) had Gary Tatum (24T) riding his tail for most of Open Wheel heat one, and Tatum even tried to move into first on a restart, but eventually slowed enough to let track points leader Michael Lee (55) past to finish in second behind Zimmerman. The second Open Wheel heat put David Flowers (99) in front of a caution-filled field of tough competitors. Although David's machine over-powered the rest, during the race, Gerald Hodge (10) stuck close to Scott Boley (16) throughout and pulled in a close third-place spot behind Scott. Quick as a flash Randle Sweeney (33) wrapped up the Late Model dash in front of a tight field that lasted the first few laps. Tony Albright (1) was locked into second with Gary Frost (F14) in third, but Mike Chandler (51) would make the crowd guess if he could overtake Frost. When the white flag came out, Frost would have a solid third place behind Albright and Sweeney. Carnell Parker III (75) took the lead in the first Late Model heat race with Jimmy Grant (4) and Ronnie Frost (8) in tow. Grant would pull away from Frost after the first couple laps to move up to Parker's rear bumper. Carnell kept up the throttle and Grant would have to take second place. It took two restarts to get the final Late Model heat underway. Machines left the track as pileups took their toll. Richard Frost (15) grabbed the lead and held it a few car lengths from David Miller (K1) who brought in the close second place. The first couple laps of the Pro Street dash was a good run with Caudle (RC1) leading the way. Excessive smoke from one car obscured views, slowed the race, and put one car off the track. Other cautions followed as only three cars finished the race with Caudle winning, Tommy Harris (98) second, and after holding second for half the race, Don Young (41) in third. Joey King (55) put over a quarter of a lap between himself and his nearest contender, Bernd Kollmann (35). The rest of the field closely followed as King led the way across the finish line, keeping the lengthy lead. Stiff competition dominated the first Mini Modified heat race, where a pileup in turn four was ruled no-fault and lined the cars back up with Michael Dial (Z2) in front. On Dial's tail was Floyd Clinard Jr. (05), Ronnie Richardson (15) and Charles Newberry (23), all who had their sights set on the prize. At times only three car lengths would separate these four cars. Dial hung in for the win with Clinard and Richardson pulling up to place and show. With one quick caution the second Mini Modified heat wrapped up the heat races for the night where Dale McCord (31) kept his lead on the field throughout. Jerrel Jones (32) kept McCord in his sights but couldn't quite prevail. McCord took the checkered first.
Timothy Hunter (77) put over a half lap of distance between his car and the second place finisher, Craig Woldt (99), in the Pure Mini Stock feature. Tim's long-awaited win comes as track champion Chris Perrigo didn't make it out to the track tonight. When the Open Wheel feature took to the track, a "Sweeney Front Row" led the nineteen cars past the green flag as Mike (25S) and Randle (182) began their challenge. They didn't make it into the second lap before the caution came out. On the restart, they were at it again for three more laps until debris on the track slowed the race again. One lap into the restart, Randle pulled ahead of Mike and a spin towards the rear of the field brought out the yellow flag a few laps later, then another yellow on that restart. On the third restart the pursuing drivers caught Mike up in the fray as Clayton Miller (X15) pulled up from his third row start to take over second place and Gil Smith (7X) and Michael Lee (55) were left to decide third. A final caution slowed the pace and let Miller stay close to Randle Sweeney through the finish. And it let Michael Asberry (1A) move past Lee with one lap to go to take the third spot. Brian Caudle (RC1) took a customary lead in the Pro Street feature. That left Don Young (41) and Matt Potter (64) to slug it out for second. A mechanical failure slowed the race and Young tried to keep up on the restart. Instead it was Potter looking for second, but he didn't quite make it as Caudle took home the top prize followed by Young, then Potter to show. Tony Albright (1) was in hot pursuit of Late Model feature race leader Randle Sweeney (33) with Gary Frost (F14) right behind in the opening laps of the race and slipped past Sweeney when F14 would fall to mechanical failure. On the restart Albright would have the lead spoken for but Sweeney wouldn't allow it, gunning it past Albright early on. Albright found Mike Chandler (51) passing him as well right at the half way point, as leaders were well into lap traffic dodging in & out of the field. Twenty grueling laps later Sweeney takes home another win as Chandler held second place and Albright pulled in for the show. The Street Stock feature had cars four-wide on the back stretch on the first lap as mid-field competitors kept close check of each other. Dale Phillips (87) would take the early lead while Dorris McCord (45) and Henry Gibbs (75) drove side-by-side for second. A caution left McCord solidly in second and as the feature got back underway, moved him up close to Phillips. One lap later McCord had the lead and Gibbs would stick to Phillips until the white flag flew. Gibbs would make a gallant effort on the final lap to get second but wouldn't quite make it; Phillips took second place behind Dorris McCord. Mini Modified race cars had the track to close out the show as Ronnie Richardson (15) and Michael Dial (Z2) led the first lap. Dial would slip and let Richardson take a good lead ahead of Dale McCord (31) and Floyd Clinard Jr. (05). And by the time it was over, 31 would be out due to mechanical failure and Clinard had Charles Newberry (23) opting for second. Clinard held up for second place while Richardson had all the fun and glory with the win.
