TAMPA, FL – Tim McCreadie of Watertown, NY will start on the pole position for the $10,000-to-win 100-lap 6th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race on Saturday night at East Bay Raceway Park for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series. The defending race champion was the fast qualifier and won the first heat race in the Image Skin Care Rocket.
On Friday night, Qualifying and four 15-lap heat races took place to set the first 16 starting spots for Saturday night’s main event. Jonathan Davenport of Cowpens, SC won the second heat race and will start outside of McCreadie in the front row driving the Baird Transport Barry Wright.
The 2010 East Bay Raceway Park Race Car Engineering Late Model Champion Bryan Bernhardt of Clearwater, FL drove the B&B Precision Mowing Rocket to victory in the third heat race and will start the big show on Saturday night from the inside of row two. Jeff Smith of Chatsworth, GA starts the main event from the outside of the second row after winning the fourth heat race in the Josh Roberts Trucking Warrior.
After winning the race last year, McCreadie picked up where he left off, as he was the fast qualifier among the 44 entrants with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in 16.197 seconds to earn the pole position for the first heat race. T-Mac led wire-to-wire to win the first heat and earn the pole position for his defense of the ten-thousand dollar top prize.
The top four finishers in each heat race earned a starting spot in the big show. Jack Nosbisch Jr. of Riverview, FL in the Adams Used Auto Parts Rocket, Travis Varnadore of Valrico, FL in the L. Miller & Associates Rayburn, and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN finished second through fourth respectively in the first heat.
Nosbisch starts fifth, Varnadore lines up ninth, and Johnson takes the green flag for the big show from the inside of row seven in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior. Joining Davenport in transferring to the main event out of the second heat race were Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, WV, Jeff Mathews of Dover, FL, and Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS.
Horton will start the Adams Used Auto Parts Warrior in the main event from the sixth starting slot, Mathews will line up tenth in the Night Hawk Towing Rocket, and his teammate Wing starts his Night Hawk Towing Rocket 14th for the main event.
Second through fourth respectively in the third heat race were Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC in the AES, Inc. Barry Wright, Phillip Cobb of Riverview, FL in the Mathis Farms Barry Wright, and Doug Watson of Lithia, FL in the Brandon Auto Salvage Rocket. Franklin starts the main event seventh, Cobb starts 11th, and Watson starts the big show from the 15th starting spot.
Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN, Shan Smith of Dade City, FL, and Steve Mathis of Plant City, FL followed Jeff Smith under the checkered flag in the fourth heat. Weaver starts Saturday night’s race from the eighth spot in the Cardinal Paint and Body Warrior, Shan Smith in the Outlaw Race Parts TNT starts 12th, and Mathis starts 16th in the Mathis Farms Rayburn.
Drivers that finished fifth through 11th in their respective heat races on Friday night will have another opportunity to make the 24-car starting field through one of two 20-lap B-Main races on Saturday night. The top three finishers in each B-Main race will fill in starting positions 17 through 22.
Starting positions 23 and 24 are NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Provisional spots reserved for the Top 15 in the National point standings that fail to qualify for the main event through heat race or B-Main competition.
Among the drivers still looking to race their way into the big show are UMP Champions Scott Weber of Festus, MO in the Joe Kehrer Roofing Rocket and Jason Feger of Mount Vernon, IL in the Ricks Towing Rayburn.
