COLUMBUS, MS – Tanner English of Benton, KY in the Garner Brothers Line Rayburn was awarded the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win in the 40-lap main event on Saturday night at Columbus Speedway after the disqualification of apparent winner Ronny Hollingsworth of Northport, AL in the Kelley Electric Mastersbilt.

The engine in Hollingsworth’s car was found to have illegal valve springs during the post-race technical inspection, and was disqualified giving English the victory. The win gave English a “clean sweep,” as he was also the McLeod Construction Fast Qualifier among the 39 entrants with a lap around the ¼-mile clay oval in 14.625 seconds.

English took the lead on lap two from Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA in the Hays Family Racing/Barto Enterprises Warrior, but lost the point to Hollingsworth after a lap 26 restart. English looked like he was going to have to settle for second after leading 27 laps of the race, but the post-race technical inspection changed things in English’s favor.

The defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS finished second in the H.E. Mosley, Inc. Trak-Star, and Rick Rickman of Columbus, MS took the third spot in the Rickman Trucking Mastersbilt. Shawn Edwards of Louisville, MS was fourth in the Montgomery Farms Trak-Star.

Jay Blair of Angie, LA finished fifth in the J&A Trucking Mastersbilt to earn the Race Car Engineering Fifth-Place Award, and Ben McCreary of Baldwyn, MS earned the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Race Award with a sixth-place finish in the Waddle Trucking Mastersbilt.

Two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN extended his point lead with a seventh-place finish in the Eads Farms Warrior. Gentry now leads Larry Boutwell of Baker, FL by 22 points.

Boutwell finished 13th in the McLeod Construction Rocket after starting third. Boutwell cut down a tire early in the race, and that earned him the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award.

Brad Hall of Knoxville, TN took the eighth spot in the Pilot Oil Rocket, and grabbed sole possession of third-place in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National point standings, four points behind Boutwell. Hall picked up the Race Car Engineering Eighth-Place Award.

Frank Ingram of Woodstock, GA was ninth in the Gardner Excavating Rocket, and earned the Maximum Signs Ninth-Place Award. Chase Washington of Houlka, MS rounded out the top ten in the Jerry Inmon Race Cars GRT. Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS started 22nd and finished 11th to earn the Hard Charger of the Race Award.

Rainey took the lead from his outside front row starting spot at the start of the race followed by English, McDuffie, Greg Allen of Cherokee, AL in the J&K Leasing Mastersbilt, and Boutwell. English drove under Rainey in turn two to take the lead on lap two.

Hollingsworth passed Allen for the fourth spot on lap five, and then drove around McDuffie to take the third position on lap eight. Hollingsworth’s drive to the front of the pack took him around Rainey for second on lap ten. English began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 12, as Hollingsworth began to close a half straightaway deficit.

Rainey began to fade on lap 14, as Rickman got by him for the fifth spot on lap 14. The first of two caution flags came out on lap 18 when Mark Stokes of Steens, MS spun the Kountry Kitchen Trak-Star in turn two. English lined up for the restart with the field double-file behind him with Hollingsworth choosing the inside line, and McDuffie from third spot on the outside.

McDuffie was able to drive around Hollingsworth on the restart to reclaim the second spot. Rickman got around Allen for the fourth position on lap 20. The final caution flag came out on lap 26 when Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA spun the Turner Excavating DWB in turn two.

With English still on the point and in a row by himself for the double-file restart, second-place McDuffie chose the inside with third-place Hollingsworth on the outside. When the green flag came out for the restart, Hollingsworth powered back around McDuffie for second, and quickly reeled in English to challenge for the lead.

By lap 27, English and Hollingsworth were racing side-by-side for the lead with English working the bottom groove, and Hollingsworth riding the cushion on the outside. Hollingsworth drove by English coming off the fourth turn on lap 29, but it was all for naught with the post-race technical infraction.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour now moves to the west side of Columbus, MS on Saturday night for the second half of the Crosstown Challenge at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
