WEST PLAINS, MO (March 19, 2005) - - With the exception of his love for golf, you don't normally associate any other sports to Terry Phillips, other than his expertise at driving a dirt Late Model. That is until this past Saturday night when Phillips won the 6th annual DirtWorks Race Cars Justin Stanfill Memorial Open Wheel Modified race.

Phillips only real experience behind the wheel of the Open Wheel variety came in a mega event at Batesville, Arkansas last year, but Phillips took both his regular Late Model and the newly added Open Wheel to Arizona this winter and scored a preliminary feature win playing with the Open Wheel.

The $8,000 to win event at West Plains Motor Speedway provided Phillips a good opportunity to add to his resume a major Open Wheel victory after the 38 year old driver won Thursday night's qualifying feature to earn a front row start for Saturday nights highlighted event, but he would have to fend off some of the best Open Wheel drivers in the country as 125 drivers from 12 states visited the 3/8th's mile oval in an attempt to be one of the 24 drivers starting Saturday's nights annual event.

Phillips started the 40 lap main alongside fellow Late Model regular Jeff Taylor, who was the prerace pitside favorite to win the national event for the Open Wheels. But once the green fell the race quickly fell in to Phillips control and the former winner of West Plains Motor Speedway's marquee event, the Show-Me 100, put Taylor and the 22 other drivers in his tire tracks as he skillful put his GRT chassised out front for entire distance to win rather easily.

Behind Phillips and Taylor, the action was a little more intense as drivers Jason Hughes, Jared Landers and George White put on a heated battle for what would be the show place on the evening. Hughes, from West Plains, Landers driving a #'06 Mark Martin NASCAR Homecoming paint schemed-entry and George White, a Texan who already has a couple of major money victories to his credit in the early '05 season, gained the fans attention. While they never officially change position throughout the event, the three drivers spent several laps running side by side and side by side by side as they raced their way 3 wide around the semi-banked track.

Elsewhere in the field, Mississippi driver Chris Moore and Taylor's younger brother, Peyton, were major movers as they raced their way to top ten finishes, Moore in sixth and Taylor in tenth just behind Late Model driver Wendell Wallace, drove it high and low in mixed traffic in attempts to get to the front of the field. Saturday night prelim winner Jeremy Russell from Jonesboro, Arkansas held his own in joining fellow Arkansas driver Robby Arnold in staying in the mix and finishing in the top ten, eight and sixth respectfully.

In a unique format, 12 heat races were contested Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in which the top two finishers in each heat advanced to a 25 lap qualifying feature each night. The top eight finishers in those three qualifying features made up the 24 starters in the final 40 lap event Saturday night.

The nights big winner, Phillips is scheduled to return to West Plains Motor Speedway in less than a month when the MARS (Mid-American Racing Series) contest a $3,000 to win race on April 9th for the Late Model race cars that Phillips normally is found driving every weekend.

After a practice day this Saturday from 1:30-6:30 at West Plains, weekly racing action begins it's 16th season of racing and family entertainment on April 2nd at 7 p.m. Complete 2005 races scheduled for West Plains Motor Speedway can be obtained by consulting www.westplains-speedway.com or by calling (870) 994-7447, Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 CST.
