B FEATURE Highlights

B1 had Mike Wallace jumping to the lead within the first corner of lap 1 as about then Brett LaFolette would spin bringing out a early caution. On the restart Aubrey Swan would have only moment af fun as he soon parted for the pit side. Gary Webb and Bill Frye would keep the action at the top as they continued for several laps side by side inches from each other. Lap 6 was for Lafolette againspinning in turn 4. On the go again it was Wallace pulling from 5 to smetimes 10 spots ahead of Frye while Webb had to settle for one place away from a transfer behind Frye.
B2 was Mike Martin bringing the first caution spinning into the frontstretch wall getting nose damage but able to continue. Continuing was all for Darrell Defrance as he bridged a good gap for several laps until lap 6 when caution flew for Dan Pablo. On throttle was Larry Clawson as he was able to slip by Mooneyham for position all the while Will Ince was working the bottom getting good forward bite. while in 2nd Clawson made a bobble that cost his entry into the A and instead gave him a ticket to the top as he slammed the turn 4 wall needing a wrecker to assist him to the pits. Mooneyham would capatilize with his mistake and pull back into second with Ince close by in third.
B3 sent Kevin Kaiser, Gary Gorby, and Ckint Hatley all staciking into each other in the first turn. Restarting would find Daryl Brown getting a lot of ground and passing a good part of the field as he came into 4th position. Giving it his all was Gary Gorby and Terry Melton side by side for a few laps. Then side by side was a couple of the "Rookies" as Dale Eaton and Eric Anderson swapped spots and Eaton almost swapped ends on the frontstretch. At the end it was John Anderson who had took it flag to flag for a B Feature victory.

Multi Winners at the Mid America Motor Speedway

Terry Phillips 50 Lap Champion
Alan Vaughn 2003 O'Reilly MLRA Champion
Rusty Dukes "Rookie" of this year, Racer of next year. "Rookie" Of The Year.

Ladies and Gentlemen meet you're newest Champion of the O'Reilly MLRA series for 2003.

Would it be back to back and back in black for Alan Vaughn, or Purkey surprises hometown fans with a record 4th championship finish? It would all be known at the end of the evening for both drivers as to who would have the champaign wishes and who would settle for runner up in the O'Reilly MLRA racing series. Just as the last few years it would come down to the final night to decide just who would be crowned the "best" of all the rest in a month at the Aargausey Casino in KC, Mo. on November 29, 2003. Both teams had made quick names for themselves in the points battle for the year. But in all good stories there has to be a end at the end was drawing near for the top 2 in this years series.

On the start Gary Stolba proved anything is possible in this sport and anything but good things happened for him and his teams, just after the drivers introduction after the command was given to start their engines Stolba's car wouldn't fire. A faulty MSD box was the early prediction of the problem. On the remade line up Terry Phillips wasted no time in wasting the competition. Quickly jumping in the lead leaving Al Purkey and Raymond Merrill to race side by side behind him. By lap 7 it was Phillips working on Vernon Hammond as lap traffic. A few spots back it was Ed Dixon, Mike Brown and Joe Kosiski racing for fourth spot. All the while Alan Vaughn was on the bottom and on the go.

Picking up the pace Al Purkey was on the heels of Phillips, then on lap 23 another caution would fly this time for Dale Eaton as he Rusty Dukes, and Jason Bodenhamer was three wide with Eaton at the top. Eatons car made contact with Dukes sending him into the wall and lifting him up and slapping the other side after th first impact. Bill Frye was caught in the middle as on lap 25 he had only progressed about halfway thru the pack. Then on lap 29 it would be Daryl Brown and Eric Anderson spinning in 2 with yellow being the color of flags to be used. The next caution would come soon, as another few laps had been scored as Sonny Fiendling and Brandon McCormick got together but both remained in the gas and cleared of each other.

Lap 34 was Ted Martin spinning in 4 , then Russell Portwood made concrete contact on lap 39. Again on 41 was Ted Martin and the yellowspinning in 4. Each restart had Terry Phillips glad to be leading as he could manage solid footing on the greasy track. John Anderson who had been driving a clean race then spun in 4 wth MCcormick spinning to miss him. The next caution could have been a mess as down the backstretch Darrell Defrance and Russell Portwood became as one, until Portwood seperated himself. He shot up the track with fast moving objects in his visions, luckily he was able to miss and be missed. In the front again it was Purkey challenging Phillips for the money spot. The final yellow was for Charlie Randolph stopping in turn 4. Under green for the last few laps Terry Phillips proved his worth on a Saturday night with big money on the line.

After weigh in Rusty Dukes was the first to be Crowned folloewd by the Nights winner Terry Phillips, then the crowd came to life for the "Wild Child" in his efforts of a 3 time championship. While the song written by queen played on, it was truely fitting to hear We are the Champions of the World.
