(Paducah, KY) The best Late Models drivers in the country will converge on Paducah International Raceway this Thursday, June 28th for the UMP Summer Nationals presented by Cheers Bar and Grill of Paducah.
The yearly series that runs over a 30 day period and pays over three-quarters of a million dollars in prize money will make it’s traditional appearance at PIR with local drivers taking on the best touring drivers for the top prize of $6000. Just to start the Main event for the Late Model division will pay $500.
Drivers expected for Thursday nights showdown include local drivers Randy Sellars, Benton, Kentucky’s Terry English, John Tindal from Fancy Farm, Kentucky, and Paducah drivers Phil Walker, and Dylan Thompson along with many others. Current PIR point leader Kevin Cole has had a couple of good runs of late after dominating in the early part of the season. Cole will try to regain the dominance he had and return to the Withers Broadcasting Winners Circle. All the local drivers will have to deal with the touring drivers like Brian Shirley who had a great deal of success at PIR one year ago. Wendall Wallace, Bill Frye, Terry Phillips, Kevin Korte, Dennis Erb Jr., Mike Marlar, Rodney Melvin, Jeep VanWormer, Don O’Neal.
Last years race was one of the best in recent years with Shannon Babb adding to his record setting victory total. The pit gates will open at 2pm for this special event. The grandstands will open at 5pm with one-lap Qualifying taking place at 6:45. The racing action starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 for Adults and Children 12 and under are $5. Paducah International Raceway will not race on Friday June 29th due to the UMP Summer National race. Racing will resume on Friday July 6th with driver appreciation night. All divisions will be racing with a spectacular fireworks display after the races.
NASCAR Stars Dale Earnhardt Jr, Ken Schrader and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Paducah International Raceway in November of 2005. Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart joined the trio of Co-Owners as a partner in September of 2006. The 3/8th mile high banked oval will host several high profile events including three NASCAR Nights, The USA World 50, and the Tri-Track Challenge. Paducah International Raceway races every Friday night and is located off Interstate-24 at exit 11 in Paducah, Kentucky.
