LOCUST GROVE AR. In a prelude to the Batesville Speedway Salute to Six series finale, 40 Open Wheel Modifieds entered NASCAR Night. Nextel Cup stars Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace were on hand to compete for $1,000 top prize in the special Thursday night event.
Jeremy Payne, transplant to Batesville, Arkansas, originally from Tucson, Arizona went wire to wire in the 25 Lap Feature, colleting the win for the evening. Schrader fared the best of the two pavement experts, running in the top ten early before fading back to 11th.
Payne held the pole for the feature, with Richie Tosh to his outside. Payne drove to the lead as the green flag appeared. Wendell Wallace blasted from his 3rd row inside starting postion to duel with Tosh for 2nd. Wallace grabbed the second spot on lap four. While that was going on, Payne moved out to a ten car length advantage over the field.
Jared Landers was looking under Tosh for the third spot, and that pair went side by side for the next several laps. The first caution on the race came on lap ten, as Garrett Durrett was up against the inside retaining wall in turn three. The yellow flew again two laps later for Charlie Armstrong who had gotten turned around in turn two.
Bill Frye blasted into fourth on the lap 12 restart. Frye and Landers dueled side by side for third on lap 13. Shawn Walsh picked his way to fifth, past Tosh on the next circuit.
By lap 15, Payne and Wallace were nose to tail for the lead, and the top four contenders were close to each other on lap 18. Payne was able to ease ahead of Wallace by five car lengths by lap 20. Frye and Landers were side by side again on lap 23, and Frye was able to nose ahead on the backstretch before securing the spot coming out of turn four.
Jeremy Payne went the rest of the way for the win heading Wendell Wallace, Bill Frye, Jared Landers, with Shawn Walsh making up the top five. Richie Tosh, Peyton Taylor, Jack Sullivan, Duke Whiseant, and Ronnie Jeffrey rounded out the top ten.
Steven Tucker was the apparent Economy Modified feature winner, but a post race inspection disqualified Tucker. The win went to Johnny Branscum ahead of Jay Jenkens, Brent Hartwick, Brad Hartwick, with Scott Pully rounding out the top five.
