MAQUOKETA, Iowa (May 28) – Two IMCA Modified drivers who made long tows to Jackson County Speedway battled it out for the top prize at Saturday evening’s Shootout special.
After the checkers flew, Brian Mullen went home to Wisconsin with a $2,000 check and Kansas hotshoe David Murray Jr. got second place pay.
Jake Bowman, Ron Barker and Thad Wilson rounded out the top five in a fast-paced 40-lap feature that saw only one caution.
Joe Beal started on the pole and grabbed the lead at the drop of the green with fellow front row starter and hometown favorite Bowman hot on his tail.
The fourth starting Mullen moved into third on the opening lap and settled in for a long green flag run behind the front pair.
On lap 24, Mullen moved by both Bowman and Beal to take the lead. Eighth starting Murray moved into second with seven laps to go but didn’t have enough time to reel in Mullen. Bowman held on off Barker to take fourth and Wilson beat Justin O’Brien to the stripe for sixth.
Mullen had already quali¬fied for the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.
Ray Guss Jr. took the lead on lap 15 and raced to his first local IMCA Late Model feature win of the season.
