USMTS ‘Hunters’ hit the road for five-race Labor Day Weekend

FAIRMONT, Minn. (Aug. 30) – Halfway through the 22-race Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy, the battle to become the next USMTS National Champion heats up this week as the drivers and teams hit the road this week for five days of guts and glory during the Labor Day Weekend.

Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, continues to lead the points chase with a 97-point cushion over nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa.

Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., is just 132 points behind the leader in third, followed by defending titleist Jason Hughes (-151), Johnny Scott (-171), Zack VanderBeek (-202), Dustin Boney (-279), Jason Krohn (-299), Tommy Myer (-323) and Rodney Sanders (-340).

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 31 – FAIRMONT RACEWAY, FAIRMONT, MN

On Wednesday, the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy continues at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn.

After nearly 800 events and 13 seasons, Kelly Shryock has garnered more than 170 main event victories and 10 titles, including nine USMTS National Championships and one USMTS Southern Series crown. It all started more than two decades ago for Shryock in the Hobby Stock division at Fairmont.

The first USMTS event held at Fairmont was on June 20, 2001 – a race that Shryock won with a last-lap pass of Mike Chasteen. The series returned to the big half-mile oval last year after a nine-year hiatus and the fans were treated to a thriller as Ryan Gustin emerged on top following a late-race battle with Jason Krohn.

The tough-as-nails USMTS touring titans will find some tough competition from the Fairmont regulars looking to defend their home turf.

Josh Ruby, Troy Swearingen, Denny Anderson, Roger Nielsen, Tim Pessek, Ken Odegaard, Travis DeBoer, Mark Gartner, Josh Meyer, Chris Rakness and others are expected to protect victory lane for the Fairmont “home boys.”

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand gates will swing open at 5. Hot laps are slated to begin at 7 and the first green flag waves at 7:30.

Race fans can pick up $2-off admission coupons on race day at both Casey’s General Stores locations in Fairmont.

Rick Beebe and his #22 SLAP Energy Modified will be at the Casey’s General Store located at 202 E. Blue Earth in Fairmont, Minn., while Tommy Myer and his #65 Cheetos Modified will be at the 2237 N. State St. location from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Also on the racing card will be the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 1 – HIGHWAY 3 RACEWAY, ALLISON, IA

The series kicks off the month of September with its second visit of 2011 to the historic Butler County Fairgrounds.

Earlier this year, Colt Mather captured his career-first USMTS victory after a thrilling race-long battle with Ryan Gustin. Corey Dripps captured last year’s event for his first win at the half-mile clay oval.

Kelly Shryock has three wins at the facility and Kevin Pittman has two at the former Butler County Speedway.

Other past winners at the Highway 3 Raceway include Jon Tesch, John Logue, Mike Sorensen, Johnny Saathoff, Ryan Ruter, Mark Noble, Mike Hejna, Tim Donlinger and Gustin, who won his first USMTS main event here on Aug. 28, 2008, at the age of 17.

Thursday’s event in Allison will kick off with spectator gates opening at 5 p.m. Hot laps begin at 6:30 and racing starts at 7.

Dustin Boney and his #22 Snickers Modified will be at the Casey’s General Store located at 100 Cherry St. in Allison from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the event.

Coupons will also be available at Casey’s in Cedar Falls, Nashua and Waverly.

The season finale for the Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods will also take center stage.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 2 – CHATEAU RACEWAY, LANSING, MN

Friday will find the series at Darin Toot’s Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., for the 6th Annual Cedar River Race where the 1/3-mile semi-banked clay oval always provides for exciting side-by-side racing from the drop of the first green flag to the final checkered flag.

During a stop here Memorial Day Weekend, fans witnessed a wild finish that saw Ryan Gustin and Brandon Davis make contact while racing for the lead, and ended up with Davis on the end of the wrecker while Gustin coasted into the winner’s circle.

It was one year ago that 53-year-old Blooming Prairie veteran Doug Hillson ventured into unfamiliar territory in last year’s event with a trip to victory lane to the delight of the standing-room-only crowd.

Other former USMTS event winners at the Chateau Raceway include Jason Hughes, Tim Donlinger, Jason Krohn, Tommy Myer, Jon Tesch, Kelly Shryock and Mike Chasteen.

Both Tesch and Gustin have two wins at the lightning-fast bullring.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing to follow. Also racing Friday night will be WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks.

Tommy Myer and his #65 Cheetos Modified will be at the Casey’s General Store located at 1702 12th St. SW in Austin from 11 a.m. to 1 .p.m.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 3 – DEER CREEK SPEEDWAY, SPRING VALLEY, MN

On Saturday, it's the USMTS Modifieds will tackle the popular Deer Creek Speedway the 7th Annual BP Labor Day Dual presented by Baudoin Oil will pit some of the best Modified drivers in the nation against arguably the toughest field of weekly racers on the planet.

The Deer Creek Speedway sits on 60 acres with one of America’s most popular state-of-the-art racing complexes. More USMTS main events have been staged at ‘The Creek’ than any other racetrack, and Saturday’s feature race will be the 54th here in the 13-year history of the United States Modified Touring Series.

Kelly Shryock won the first-ever race here on May 25, 2002, and has taken home the most hardware from the high-banked 3/8-mile oval with nine career wins.

Jason Hughes has six and Tim Donlinger is a fiver-time winner while Jason Cummins, Corey Dripps, Ryan Ruter, Zack VanderBeek and Terry Phillips have two victories each.

Drivers with one victory in their pocket include Randy Timms, Ryan Gustin, Mike Sorensen, Tommy Myer, Dean Mahlstedt, Jon Tesch, Jason Krohn, Steve Arpin, Chad Kinder, Mark Burgtorf, Brad McEwan, Mike Spaulding, Mike Hejna, Les Duellman, Dan Chapman, Dan Daniels, Tony Fraise, Darin Walker, Mark Noble and Steve Wetzstein.

Brad Waits won his first Deer Creek feature under the USMTS banner a little more than a month ago when he captured the inaugural World Modified Dirt Track Championship presented by Hanson Tire Service.

Cornbelt Clash Late Models, WISSOTA Super Stocks and WISSOTA Street Stocks will round out the action Saturday night.

Grandstands gates open at 3 p.m. with $1 beer, pop and hot dogs available from 3-4 p.m. Races start at 5.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 4 – DODGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY, KASSON, MN

On the fifth day, Sunday will be anything but a time for relaxing as a full program of events is on tap at the Dodge County Speedway.

Sunday’s 10th Annual Kasson Klash will be the 28th occasion that the USMTS Modifieds have taken the green flag at the Kasson, Minn., speedplant.

Tim Donlinger held off Jason Hughes in a thriller last summer during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy for his first USMTS win in Kasson.

While Hughes has three wins along with Memorial Day Weekend winner Tommy Myer, Kelly Shryock tops he list with four career wins here. Brad Waits, Todd Scharkey and Dan Chapman are two-time winners while Ryan Gustin, Mike Hejna, Mike Sorensen, Jon Tesch, Corey Dripps, Nate Wasmund, Scott Megonigle, Chris Spieker and Mike Chasteen have one win each.

Located less than 42 miles from Deer Creek, hot laps are at 5:45 p.m. with racing at 6. WISSOTA Super Stocks and WISSOTA Street Stocks are also on tap for Sunday's show.

Tommy Myer and his #65 Cheetos Modified will be at the Casey’s General Store located at 320 N. Main St. in Mantorville from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
