ALLISON, Iowa (June 1) – Mike Van Genderen went 10 years between IMCA Modified feature wins.
His next wait wasn’t nearly as long.
Van Genderen topped Wednesday’s $1,000 to win feature at Highway 3 Raceway, just four nights after taking the checkers in the rescheduled event at Boone Speedway
Ron Barker, Richie Gustin, Troy Cordes and Scott Olson completed the top five. The victory made Van Genderen the first driver on the ballot for the 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
“This is easily the biggest Modified win of my career,” said Van Genderen, owner of a track championship and five Super Nationals starts during a successful IMCA Sunoco Stock Car stint. “The field was pretty tough. Any time you can beat guys like Barker, Gustin, Cordes and Olson, you’re doing pretty good.”
Van Genderen started eighth and won his heat race, then drew the outside row four spot for the 25-lap main event.
He took the lead on lap 14, going to the top side of the track in turn four to pass Cordes and David Brown, and drove to the victory by what proved to be a comfortable margin ahead of Barker.
“This is the first time I’ve raced on a half-mile for at least 10 years,” Van Genderen said. “We decided after the race Saturday at Boone to come to Allison, and I’m glad we did.”
Before the wins at Boone and Allison, Van Genderen’s most recent IMCA Modified victory had been on April 20, 2001 at Marshalltown.
