Vance Wilson of Frankfurt, Missouri recently captured the 2010 ULMA championship in his Glawson Concrete, GVT Motorsports, Riverport Signs, Crystal Ambrose, Finish Line Auto Sales, Heartland Auto Body, Harness Farms, Rocket chassis late model by the closest margin in ULMA’s four-year history. The title came down to the very end between Wilson and 2008 champion, Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview, Missouri. Heading into the final weekend of racing at Callaway Raceway and Central Missouri Speedway (CMS), Wilson had a two-point advantage on Bodenhamer with both drivers recording ten wins out of the fifteen used to determine the championship. Once the action at Callaway Raceway was rained out, this meant the title would be decided at CMS, where Wilson had struggled this year and Bodenhamer had dominated. Bodenhamer had to win the feature event in order to become the first two-time champion and the title came down to the very last turn of the last lap with Bodenhamer in a must-win situation. But it was not to be as the checkered flag flew, Bodenhamer finished in second-place and Wilson took the championship by the slimmest of margins in an exciting conclusion to the season. ULMA congratulates Vance Wilson on his fantastic season and all drivers who participated in the association’s fourth year of rules-sanctioned races. Chris Cox of Jefferson City earned the 2010 ULMA Rookie of the Year title and finished tenth in the final standings, recording 23 top ten finishes throughout the season in an outstanding campaign.

Incredibly, Wilson’s title chase did not begin until July when he joined the association as a member during the Triple Crown Shootout double point’s weekend, after which he went on a terror, racking up win after win. Prior to joining the association as a member, Wilson had recorded six victories earlier in the season between Callaway Raceway and Lucas Oil Speedway. In a short period, Wilson recorded ten wins, two of which were double point’s wins (giving him credit for 12 wins) and three second-place finishes for his fifteen best finishes of the year. It was a single-season record of wins and earned points by a driver. Bodenhamer had nine victories en route to his 2008 ULMA title and also scored nine victories in 2010. It was the second year in a row the association championship was decided after the final checkered flag of the season. There were 11 different drivers who posted victories this season including Wilson (10), Bodenhamer (9), Jon Binning (4), Jeff Schlup (3), Jeremy Kelley (3), Bob Test (2), Tommy Cordray (2), Darin Walker (2), Steven Clancy (1), Jesse Stovall (1), and Christopher Morelock (1). ULMA members claimed 38 features out of 49 main events contested at the affiliated tracks. Jason Bodenhamer claimed the biggest payout offered to ULMA members, a $1,500 payday at CMS in July while Wilson earned the title of Missouri State Fair Champion when he took the win when ULMA drivers participated in the State Fair races for the first time ever in August.

Odessa, Missouri driver Steven Clancy continued his late-season surge by recording his first and only victory of the 2010 campaign by edging Bodenhamer at the line at CMS on the final night of action. The duo had an exciting battle to the finish with Clancy coming out on top in a field of eighteen late models. Brett Wood of Warrensburg finished his year with a strong third-place run, Trace Westling made his lone CMS appearance of the year pay off with a fifth-place showing, Danny Lorton came away in sixth position, Jon Binning was eighth, Danny Monroe ninth, and Zeke Langley in his first and only CMS appearance was tenth among 15 ULMA drivers competing in the field of 18 cars. Late Model drivers participated in the most recent Homes for Our Troops benefit fundraiser at CMS on the final night of the season at the track and collected over $600 for the charity, which raises money for wounded war veterans for future homes. All total, ULMA drivers helped the organization collect over $2,000 this season.

ULMA wishes to congratulate the affiliated track’s championship drivers this season. At Lucas Oil Speedway Tommy Cordray of Browning, Missouri wrapped up his second-consecutive track championship. At CMS, Bodenhamer claimed his first-ever track championship at the speedway in which his Dad was pivotal in starting. Wilson claimed the crown at Callaway Raceway in dominating fashion by claiming ten feature wins. ULMA is proud of its members claiming the track championship titles at the tracks and congratulates all drivers finishing in the top tier of the track’s point standings. It has certainly been a tough year but drivers did their best to stay competitive through financially difficult times as well as a total of 23 rained out events during the 2010 ULMA season. ULMA drivers competed in a total of 49 sanctioned events this season between Lucas Oil Speedway, Central Missouri Speedway, Callaway Raceway, and Missouri State Fair Speedway.
