Inside Line Promotions - ALGER, Wash. (June 9, 2014) - Austen Wheatley used a last-lap pass to earn his second podium finish of the season last Saturday at Skagit Speedway.
"The track was hooked up and wide open," he said. "Nobody was really passing. Those Morrison engines we have definitely help us. Those have been a great addition to the team."
Wheatley opened the event by qualifying second quickest, which was the third time this season he has earned that feat.
"It's cool to qualify good there, but there's no benefit," he said. "Almost every week we've been there we've qualified in the top two and almost every time they roll the six or the eight for the feature inversion, so it doesn't do us any good."
After finishing where he started - third - in his heat race, the feature inversion was a six to line Wheatley up on the inside of the third row for the 25-lap main event.
"I fell back to seventh at the beginning," he said. "It didn't feel that great. I was just struggling."
Following the slow start, Wheatley rallied to pick up a handful of positions. He gained third place exiting turn four on the final lap.
"I got Trey (Starks) out of turn four coming to the checkered," he said. "If it was slick like it has been, me and Trey would have finished first and second."
The result marked Wheatley's fourth top five in his last six races, which have all been top 10s.
