ATOMIC CITY, Idaho (Sept. 16-17) – Justen Yeager took the drama out of the final doubleheader of the season for the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour, clinching the IMCA Modified series crown by winning both events at Atomic Motor Raceway.
Yeager took a seven point advantage over defending champion Zane DeVilbiss into the Sept. 16-17 twinbill. They ran 1-2 on opening night at Atomic City, but the race for the title ended abruptly on Saturday when Yeager was quick to get to the front while DeVilbiss was involved in two early incidents and ended in 23[SUP]rd[/SUP].
As a result, Yeager earns a $600 share of the $3,000 tour point fund, plus national and regional bonus points. The 2009 EQ WWMT champion was already on the ballot for the 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
Jerry Bailey drew the pole on Friday and gave up the front spot to Casey Delp on the second of 30 laps. Yeager was into the lead by lap seven and while DeVilbiss rocketed all the way from 15[SUP]th[/SUP] to second by lap eight.
DeVilbiss challenged Yeager several times but could not find a way past. Bailey, Chase Hansen and Delp rounded out the top five. Hansen earned hard charger honors, advancing 14 positions.
Yeager outran home track local driver and former WWMT feature winner at Atomic Travis Metz of for his Saturday win.
Dustin Hansen led the first two laps of the feature before Metz took over. Yeager drove his way to the front on lap nine and never looked back while DeVilbiss got caught up in two early incidents which relegated him to 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] on the evening.
Arizona driver Austin Black finished third with and Delp and Dustin Hansen following. Wade Taylor was the hard charger as he advanced eight spots to finish 11th.
Yeager now owns a dozen career series victories, second on the all-time list behind 2007 and 2008 tour champion Ricky Alvarado’s 23. He’s swept EQ WWMT doubleheaders at three different tracks, Alamosa Motor Speedway in 2008, Battle Mountain Raceway in 2009 and Atomic.
