Tradition holds true this Saturday night as the ‘Mighty’ Modified division will headline the final special-event race of the year on the high banks of Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). Every year the mighty ones compete in three special races held around the main holidays during the race season. This Saturday night, September 1st, the third and final big one of the year rolls off with a 24-car starting field competing in a 40-lap feature event. The mystique of who will show up at CMS when it comes to the big-money races is something that the fans in the stands talk about for weeks before and after each of the special races. In year’s past the Labor Day race has seen the likes of Terry Schultz, who was last year’s winner, Dave Meyer, a three-time winner, Joe Walker, Justin Boney, Richard Layne, and Tom Charles all go to victory lane. Who will show up and who will walk away with the crown and the check this year is anyone’s guess! Special event pricing is in effect for the race action this weekend with general admission $15; seniors, students and military w/ID $12; kids 6 to 12 $10; and children 5 and under free! Pit passes for this weekend are $25. Modified drivers are reminded they will have to pay a $100 entry fee if they have not raced at least twice prior to this weekend in a modified at CMS. This weekend’s races will not count towards the modified point’s championship as it is a special event; however, the modifieds will complete their point’s season along with the other CMS classes the following week, September 8th for season championships in all division at the final night of racing in 2007. The pit gates open at 4:30, spectator gates open at 5, hot laps get under way at 7 and the first green flag drops for the heat races at 7:30.

Plans are already in the works for next year at the track with the first announcement regarding the 2008 season being the annual Registration Meeting will be held on Saturday, January 19th from 9am to noon at the ABC Building, Grover Park, in Warrensburg, Missouri. The practice sessions for 2008 will be on April 5th and 12th, both being held in the daylight hours with the evening practice being held on April 19th. Opening night at the speedway for next year is going to be on April 26th with the season closing out on September 6th. What is sure to be the highlight of the year and one of the most highly anticipated events of 2008 in the Greater Kansas City area, CMS will host the July 4th and 5th annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl. This 2-night event, which will feature a $1,500-to-win Street Stock special event on Friday the 4th plus night one of modified action and then on Saturday the 5th, the mighty modifieds will cap off the weekend with a $5,000-to-win race! Planning for the event is ongoing but the dates are set for this huge weekend of racing. Full details regarding the support classes, entry fees, format and admission prices for this race will be announced through press releases and on the CMS Website as details are finalized during the off-season. CMS is currently accepting sponsorship for this event and the 2008 season. If your company or business is interested please call Susan Walls at (816) 229-1338 to find out about the great opportunities for track and event sponsors! Be sure to mark this race weekend on your 2008 calendars now so you can begin planning for the biggest race of its kind ever held in the area for modified racing action!

With just two weekends of racing left, a brief look at the point standings shows some close battles for the top ten positions in each division. The ‘mighty’ modified leader continues to be ‘Smokin’ Joe Walker, and although he had a “did-not-finish” (DNF) last weekend, he was able to remain atop the standings because his nearest competitor, Terry Schultz, of Sedalia, Missouri also registered a DNF in the feature event. Walker now holds a 45-point lead over Schultz with only the September 8th race night counting towards the point championship. This weekend’s special will not be a points-earning race night for the modifieds. Jim Moody holds down the third position with Tim Karrick in hot pursuit just behind Moody in fourth. Last year’s defending track champion, Aaron Marrant, rounds out the top five. The resurgence of weekly late model racing in the local area has led to a tight battle at the top of the standings between defending track champion, Brett Rollert, of Smithville, Missouri and Odessa, Missouri’s Steven Clancy. Heading into this weekend, Rollert has only a 30-point lead over Clancy. Nine-time feature race winner Bob King isn’t out of the championship hunt either, as he sits just behind the lead duo in third, with Brett Wood and Jamie Wineland holding down fourth and fifth. Brian Johnson’s ten feature race victories have placed him way out front in the Street Stock division but the battle for second is sure to go down to the wire with Herb Dannar, Tammy Korff, Jeff Lazenby and Chad Eickleberry all separated within the top five by a mere 90 points! Like Johnson, Scotty Martin enjoys a huge lead in his division as he continues to pace the B-modifieds courtesy of his 12 feature race victories out of 18 ran this year! Brian “Ziggy” Ziegler of Bates City and Kingsville’s Michael Mullins are currently in a hotly contested battle for second, with first-year driver Ethan Isaacs holding strong in fourth and veteran driver Johnny Ebert rounding out the top five. A view of the top ten in each division follows in this press release; for a full view of the point standings heading into this weekend’s action visit the CMS Website.
