“Xtremely” Tight Points Battle For 2004 Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series “YJ STINGER CUP” Championship!!!

A scant 90 points is all that separates the first four drivers after round No. 7 of the 2004 Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series chase for the ‘YJ STINGER CUP” Championship and the $60,000 in cash, keys to a 2004 HummerH2 and a myriad of other prizes that will be awarded to the champion at seasons end.
Donnie Moran of Dresden,OH and Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound,WI entered last week-ends (5/7 & 5/8) events tied for the points lead. Moran was listed first due to his two series wins to Mars’ one series win, but the “racing gods” changed that for Moran in a hurry. Moran’s week-end troubles saw an early race skirmish at Auto Tire and Parts (MO) Racepark take away the handling on his QPI Tools/Eddie’s Sunoco/MasterSbilt/SMS Racing Engines No. 99 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. After pitting for repairs midway in the race Moran could only muster a 19th place finish. While running second at LaSalle (IL) Speedway the next night, Moran’s driveshaft broke, while circling the track under caution, three laps from the finish resulting in a 21st place DNF (did not finish).
For Mars the week-end went much better than his counterpart. Mars finished a strong second in the week-ends opening event and then managed a 10th place finish at LaSalle (IL) Speedway aboard his Stacker®/Heeg Well Drilling/Deppe Enterprises/MasterSbilt/Pro Power Racing No. 28M Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Mars’ two top 10 finishes last week-end find him back atop the ‘YJ STINGER CUP” Point Standings while Moran tumbled to third but only 82 points behind Mars.
Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine,IA continued his consistent runs over the week-end to hold on to the runner-up spot in points, only 60 markers behind Mars and 22 ahead of Moran. Birkhofer grabbed the RINGERS GLOVES Time Trial award on the opening night, a heat race win and a 3rd place finish aboard his Daufeldt Transport/J&J Steel/McDonald’s/ MasterSbilt/Pro Power Racing No. 15B Monte Carlo. “Birky” then parlayed another heat race win and 3rd place finish at LaSalle.
Don O’Neal of Martinsville,INmoved into the top 5 of the “YJ STINGER CUP” Point Standings thanks to his two wins and two YJ STINGER EXTREME ENERGY DRINK dash wins. O’Neal, who pilots the A1 Auto Salvage/Living Room Center/C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Jay Dickens Racing Engines No. 71 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, now sits fourth in the point standings. O’Neal is 90 points behind Mars, 30 points behind Birkhofer and only 8 points behind Moran.
Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville,FL holds onto the fifth spot in points after grabbing two top 10 finishes in last week-end’s action aboard the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford/Rocket/Larry Wallace Racing Engines No. 1 Ford Taurus. Only 125 points out of the lead, Pearson Jr. placed fifth Friday and then roared to a sixth place finish at LaSalle after using a series provisional start and starting 23rd.
The 2003 Xtreme DirtCar Series “Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year”, Matt Miller of Waterville,OH heads the up the second five in the point standings. Miller, the pilot of the McCullough Motorsports/Rocket/Russell Baker Racing Engines No. 7 Pontiac Grand Prix, holds a scant 12 point edge for sixth over current “Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year” leading point contender Billy Drake.
Drake, driver of the MasterSbilt Race Cars/Executive Homes/Steidinger Construction/Mullvain Engines No. 9 Pontiac Grand Prix, snared an 8th place finish at Auto Tire And Parts Racepark and late race pass of Birkhofer Saturday to garner runner-up honors at LaSalle propelling him into seventh.
Veteran John Mason of Millersburg,OH sits eighth in points garnering two top 15 places over the week-end in his Bert Transmissions/Mason Racin’/C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Malcuit Racing Engines No. 72 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Shane Clanton of Locust Grove,GA jump into the top 10 of the “YJ STINGER CUP” Point Standings after starting the week-end in twelfth. An 11th place finish Friday and a 5th place finish Saturday gave the driver of the RSD Enterprises/SAE Parts/Rocket/Custom Racing Engines No. 25 Monte Carlo enough points to crack the top 10 and into ninth.
Ray Cook of Brasstown,NC rounds out the top 10 in points, though the driver of the Dodge/Bill Elliott Racing/MasterSbilt/Gaerte Racing Engines No. 53 Dodge Interpid R/T only trails Clanton by 3 points. Cook gathered an 8th place finish and an 11th place finish over the week-end to also move into the top 10.
Sitting 11th through 14th in points and not that far from breaking the top 10 in points are Darren Miller of Chadwick,IL; Steve Shaver of Vienna,WV; Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning,MI and Eddie Carrier Jr. of Ona,WV respectively. All but Shaver are contenders for the 2004 “Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year” award.
Dennis Franklin of Gaffney,SC sits 15th in points but Sonny Conley of New Martinsville,WV and Duke Whiseant of Texarkana,AR are both knocking on the door for the final points fund paying position. After the past week-end’s events Conley sits only 10 points out of 15th while Whiseant is 15 points out.
The battle for the 2004 “Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year” $10,000 award is shaping up to be a dandy as seven “rookies” have a legitimate shot at the title. Billy Drake currently heads up the field with a 70 point bulge over Clanton. Darren Miller is third, 16 points behind Clanton while Jeep Van Wormer is fourth, 28 points behind Miller and 27 points ahead of fifth place Eddie Carrier Jr.
Having to make up ground will be Conley and Whiseant but they are far from eliminated for the title.
Statistically through Round No. 7 of the 2004 Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series season, Brian Birkhofer and Earl Pearson Jr. have both taken three “RINGERS GLOVES Fast Time Awards”. Donnie Moran has the most heat race wins with six while Davey Johnson has two “B” Main wins. Don O’Neal is the only driver with more than 1 “YJ STINGER EXTREME ENERGY DRINK Dash” victory with 7 different drivers taking a “GEMINI AUTO CARE CENTERS Hard Charger of the Race” award.
Both Don O’Neal and Donnie Moran have won two Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series sanctioned main events while Darren Miller, John Mason and Jimmy Mars have each found victory lane once. C.J. Rayburn Race Cars and MasterSbilt Race Cars have three wins each with Rocket Chassis owning a lone win. Jay Dickens Racing Engines, SMS Racing Engine and Pro Power Racing have two main event wins apiece with Malcuit Racing Engines also gathering a win.
The Stacker2 Xtreme DirtCar Series will be idle for the next few weeks until the series resumes it's schedule with a big three day swing through the east. New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt,NJ will host the series Thursday, June 3 with Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown,MD welcoming the series on Friday, June 4. The week-end wraps up at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg,PA Saturday, June 4. All three events will be highlighted by 50 lap feature events paying $10,000 to win.

Drake, driver of the MasterSbilt Race Cars/Executive Homes/Steidinger Construction/Mullvain Engines No. 9 Pontiac Grand Prix, snared an 8th place finish at Auto Tire And Parts Racepark and late race pass of Birkhofer Saturday to garner runner-up honors at LaSalle propelling him into seventh.
Veteran John Mason of Millersburg,OH sits eighth in points garnering two top 15 places over the week-end in his Bert Transmissions/Mason Racin’/C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Malcuit Racing Engines No. 72 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Shane Clanton of Locust Grove,GA jump into the top 10 of the “YJ STINGER CUP” Point Standings after starting the week-end in twelfth. An 11th place finish Friday and a 5th place finish Saturday gave the driver of the RSD Enterprises/SAE Parts/Rocket/Custom Racing Engines No. 25 Monte Carlo enough points to crack the top 10 and into ninth.
Ray Cook of Brasstown,NC rounds out the top 10 in points, though the driver of the Dodge/Bill Elliott Racing/MasterSbilt/Gaerte Racing Engines No. 53 Dodge Interpid R/T only trails Clanton by 3 points. Cook gathered an 8th place finish and an 11th place finish over the week-end to also move into the top 10.
Sitting 11th through 14th in points and not that far from breaking the top 10 in points are Darren Miller of Chadwick,IL; Steve Shaver of Vienna,WV; Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning,MI and Eddie Carrier Jr. of Ona,WV respectively. All but Shaver are contenders for the 2004 “Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year” award.
Dennis Franklin of Gaffney,SC sits 15th in points but Sonny Conley of New Martinsville,WV and Duke Whiseant of Texarkana,AR are both knocking on the door for the final points fund paying position. After the past week-end’s events Conley sits only 10 points out of 15th while Whiseant is 15 points out.
The battle for the 2004 “Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year” $10,000 award is shaping up to be a dandy as seven “rookies” have a legitimate shot at the title. Billy Drake currently heads up the field with a 70 point bulge over Clanton. Darren Miller is third, 16 points behind Clanton while Jeep Van Wormer is fourth, 28 points behind Miller and 27 points ahead of fifth place Eddie Carrier Jr.
Having to make up ground will be Conley and Whiseant but they are far from eliminated for the title.
Statistically through Round No. 7 of the 2004 Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series season, Brian Birkhofer and Earl Pearson Jr. have both taken three “RINGERS GLOVES Fast Time Awards”. Donnie Moran has the most heat race wins with six while Davey Johnson has two “B” Main wins. Don O’Neal is the only driver with more than 1 “YJ STINGER EXTREME ENERGY DRINK Dash” victory with 7 different drivers taking a “GEMINI AUTO CARE CENTERS Hard Charger of the Race” award.
Both Don O’Neal and Donnie Moran have won two Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series sanctioned main events while Darren Miller, John Mason and Jimmy Mars have each found victory lane once. C.J. Rayburn Race Cars and MasterSbilt Race Cars have three wins each with Rocket Chassis owning a lone win. Jay Dickens Racing Engines, SMS Racing Engine and Pro Power Racing have two main event wins apiece with Malcuit Racing Engines also gathering a win.
The Stacker2 Xtreme DirtCar Series will be idle for the next few weeks until the series resumes it's schedule with a big three day swing through the east. New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt,NJ will host the series Thursday, June 3 with Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown,MD welcoming the series on Friday, June 4. The week-end wraps up at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg,PA Saturday, June 4. All three events will be highlighted by 50 lap feature events paying $10,000 to win.
