OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 1) – Wednesday was the 14th year for the prestigious MUSCO Lighting Great American Stock Car Shootout at the Southern Iowa Speedway with the winner of the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature walking away with a $2,000 payday.
The feature was be a thriller with two- and three-wide racing. Ryan Falck of Decorah and Cresco driver Shay Curtin went toe to toe before Curtin secured the lead and looked to be on his way to victory lane.
The caution flag flew on lap 21, however, which tightened the field up. Curtin spun his tires on the restart and slipped back to fourth, but the caution flew again for a car in turn 1 and setting up another restart.
This time Curtin held his lead into turn 1 with Matt Greiner of Washington and Tory Reicks of Waucoma battling for the lead with Greiner making the pass off turn 4 to take the lead.
Greiner went on to pick up the biggest win of his career by crossing the line and taking the $2,000 payday and a very special trophy to add to the trophy case to remember an awesome night of racing.
The second spot went to Curtin, who drove a great race while the battle for the third spot saw Brian Mitrisin top Reicks.
The Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods battled it out with Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa leading all 18 laps for his second win of the season, and this one paying a whopping $1,000 for his efforts.
The second place car of Cory Brown ended his night with a flat right rear tire giving 2007 track champion Brett Moffitt the runner-up spot with Mike Wanders of Oskaloosa taking third and Drew Lawson of Oskaloosa racing his way from the 17th starting spot to take fourth.
In the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds, Kelly Shryock of Fertile took the lead on the first lap and paced the field before two New Sharon drivers closed the gap and put pressure on the eight-time USMTS National Champion.
Zack VanderBeek and Brad Pinkerton brought the crowd to it’s feet with Pinkerton making the pass on lap 13, but a caution flag flew and forced Pinkerton to surrender the lead and restart third.
Shryock moved to the high side of the track to defend against Pinkerton, while VanderBeek made the pass on the bottom of turn 4 on lap 16.
VanderBeek went on to take the $1,000 payday with Shryock in second and Pinkerton in third.
Defending Track Champion Colt Mather of Webster was fourth and first-time visitor Adam Bell of Kalona snared the fifth spot.
In the USRA Hobby Stocks, Kris Walker of Oskaloosa and Bobby Greene of Eddyville swapped the lead several times before Nathan Wood of Keswick made the pass for the lead.
Chris Hovden of Cresco stayed glued to the rear bumper of Wood, but Wood held on for the $700 win with Hovden in second followed by Jason McDaniel of Eldon and Shannon Anderson of Atlantic taking the fourth spot after starting deep in the field.
After Wednesday's wild show, fans and drivers are revved up for this Wednesday, July 8, with racing action presented by Palmer for State Representative and the first of several “Licensed to Thrill” special events at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster.
Race fans from the town of Oskaloosa simply need to show their driver's license or i.d. card to get FREE admission to the grandstands and enjoy a full night of racing action on the house!
