Drivers and car owners alike filed into the Johnson County Fairgrounds on January 17 for the 2004 Central Missouri Speedway Rules Meeting. The new and larger venue was definitely needed as over 200 drivers, car owners, and crew members made their way through the doors for the final review of the 2004 rules.

The first hour and a half was devoted to give the drivers time to register for the upcoming racing season and reserve their car number. That hour and a half was definitely needed as 72 drivers made their way to the registration table with a final tally of 30 mighty modifieds, 19 limited late models, and 20 street stocks. The new hobby stock division rounded out the registrations and will close once they have reached 30 competitors.

Al Mizer, Technical Director, and Hershel Thompson, Flagman, conducted the majority of the meeting and clairfied some of the new rules that drivers will come across during the new season. Mizer was questioned about the addition of rack and pinion steering to the limited late model class. It was clarified that this addition was only for the cars utilizing a stock front stub.

The ruling on engine claim procedures was also clairified as a driver must remain on the lead lap in order to submit a claim.

Earl Walls, owner/promoter, then stepped up to discuss the biggest change that drivers and fans will notice during the upcoming season. A major dirtwork project has been undertaken during the winter with the corners brought out into a larger radius and the backstretch moved 33 feet to the east. "This was done to allow the full fendered group more room to race, but this also gives everybody more room to race and we think it will give the fans an even more exciting show," stated Walls. "The track is now classified as a 3/8 mile speedway on the outside."

Everybody on hand was also introduced to the new CMS announcer Greg Clemons. Greg comes to CMS with a long background in racing that ranges from driving to promotion. Clemons fills the void left by the untimely passing of longtime announcer Tom Wilson who passed away last fall.

With the rules meeting completed all of the teams now have just over two months to get their high powered machines together as cars will take to the track for a series of test & tune sessions on April 3, 10, & 17 to shake. The season kicks off on April 24 with KOKO/Sunoco Opening night seeing all four classes of cars taking to the track.
