NORMAN, Okla. -- Starting his 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series with one Top 10 finish in two nights of racing at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, Dale McDowell of Chickamauga,GA found himself ninth in the Championship point standings and knew he had a tough road ahead of him in his quest for the Championship.

A solid finish in the “Northern” opener at Allegany County Speedway in Maryland propelled “Mac-Daddy” right into the third spot in Championship points. But just as quickly as McDowell rocketed to the top three he fell. Engine problems the next night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway saw McDowell fall to tenth. A tough road indeed.

Top 10 finishes for McDowell in late April through mid-May kept McDowell right in the top ten points placers. May 20th at Brush Creek Motorsports Complex in Ohio gave McDowell a spark as he grabbed the win. Coupled with a Top 5 finish the following night at Tri-State Speedway in Indiana, McDowell moved to the seventh position in Championship points.

Two more Top 5 finishes and a Top 10 finish in the next four events during June moved the driver of the J&J Steel/Larry Shaw Race Cars/New Vision Graphics sponsored DMR owned No. 17M Larry Shaw Race Cars-Rocket/Race Tek Engines Pontiac Grand Prix into the fourth spot.

Late June and early July were just the opposite of beginning of the season for McDowell. Several mechanical problems hindered McDowell’s hopes for the Championship falling to seventh in points by the time the series headed for the Mid-South.

Shaking the bad racing luck that had plagued him through June and early July, McDowell rebounded with solid Top 5 and Top 10 finishes through the next five events keeping a firm grasp on the seventh position in Championship points. McDowell then scored his second victory of the season pocketing the richest to win event of the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season, the $40,000 to win “18th Annual USA Nationals” at Cedar Lake Speedway in Wisconsin.

Only finishing outside of the Top 10 twice through mid-September, “Mac Daddy” continued his consistent runs until breaking through with another victory. This one happening September 23rd at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway which moved him to the sixth position in Championship points.

“It was a long year on the World of Outlaws trail, but we made it through it,” commented McDowell from his race shop. “We had some good runs at times, but we also had some mechanical failures that cost us some top finishes. Everyone had their problems at one time or another during the course of the season, but it seemed like we had more than enough of our own problems. The highlight of our World of Outlaws season had to be our win in the USA Nationals at Cedar Lake in August. That was a great race and I feel fortunate that we could get the win. Even though the World of Outlaws year is over, we are still working hard before 2006 rolls around.”

Finishing the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series with three victories, sixteen Top 5 finishes and twenty-nine Top 10 finishes, McDowell also was among the series top ten in heat race wins (6) and pole dash wins (2) on his way to a sixth place finish in the 2005 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship points.
