2009 Hornet Tire Rules, Highland & Tri-City

Yes, I agree Mike…I think it’s a good way to break more spindles and knock tires off beads.

Hornet Tire Rules discussion

Thanks Mike for the tire size info and comments. If anybody knows Hornet race cars it’s Mike Z. I’m glad he will be at the rules meeting because he brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the table which will help keep guys like me from screwing the rules up too much. :D With that being said, I’m not going to get into a huge debate on here about the pros/cons of low profile tires. I have my opinion; I want the rule changed from 60 to 55 series. The 7” tread rule is fine with me. I think the rules need to adjust with the times; my 1990 Beretta was OEM with 205/55R16 so I think I should be allowed to run that size in a pure stock class. Some people will agree, others will disagree, that is why we have this forum and the rules meeting.

I would also like to address or recap some points brought up by Rob, Mike and Danno which may or may not support my opinion. I’m not pretending to be totally impartial, because I do have an agenda. Hopefully some of these points will help us have an informed discussion in this forum and at the meeting. Please feel free to share you opinions, facts, or corrections to mine.

Points and references:
1 - There are several of 55 series tires available with 7” or less tread width. (see tirerack.com)
2 - Highland and Tri-City tire rules are very similar, tracks are different lengths. Other track rules go from “street tires only” to very restrictive (see previous 2008 Hornet Tire Rules post)
3 - 16” tires and rims generally do cost more than 14” and 15” tires & rims. (see tirerack.com)
4 – Taller sidewalls flex more and provide more cushion on bumpy dirt tracks. Shorter sidewalls are stiffer and have a harsher ride (harder on suspension components). (Mike Z says so, and I believe him + multiple web sources confirm)
5 – Sidewall height is the product of (section width) X (aspect ratio %). (See the tire size calculator site Mike referenced) http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevylist/tech/tire_size_conversion.htm

Example sidewall height calculations for a 205/55, 205/60, 185/60 tire.
Formula: Section width (mm)/25.4 = in. X aspect ratio = sidewall height in.

205 /25.4 = 8.07" X .55 = 4.44" sidewall
205 /25.4 = 8.07" X .60 = 4.84" sidewall
185 /25.4 = 7.28" X .60 = 4.37" sidewall

Note: The sidewall height difference between a 205/55 and 205/60 tire is 0.4” and the 205/55 sidewall is actually 0.07” taller than a 185/60 sidewall.

6 - Wheel size is not a factor of the sidewall height but does impact the overall diameter of the tire. A handy calculator for general diameter comparison of different tire/rim sizes: http://www.tyretown.com/my_sizecalc.htm

Bottom line: If you don’t like the rules, go to the rules meeting and try to change them. If a majority of the hornet drivers at the meeting do/don’t want a rule change then that is the way it should be. If the track says “no rule change” that is the way it is. Either way, it’s pretty simple if the rules don’t change your way, you can buy your own track, take your business elsewhere, or shut up and race. :D I think I'm pretty much done pleading my case on this forum and look forward to the meeting Sunday.

Hope this gives you all something to chew on besides turkey this weekend. I really appreciate everybody keeping the thread focused on tire rules; I know its boring reading, but hopefully it’s easier to get the info without wading through a bunch of “other” stuff.

Happy Thanksgiving
