Advance timing

I hear all running timing at 30-36 deg advance?

I'm confused about this !

I think I'm at 20 degrees advance??

I mark the 20 degree mark with paint pen and advance the distributor until the 20 hits the tdc on timing tab! Is this the righ way?

So if so I need at 30 degrees or better?

Running a 377 sbc on 100 octane + with a 650 lift comp cam

Do you have your distributor locked?

How is it running, where you’re at now?

Where’s your temp running at? (Especially when the track is heavy/tacky)

Timing

My distributor is aftermarket race dist by pertronics no vaccuum ,no guts all electronic! Advance is currently at 20 deg adv..

My engine runs awsome, temp hit about 180 on tacky track

will IDE at less than 160

rpms hit about 6800-7000 on short track with 6.50 gear

will rev over 8000 no problem all eagle rotating assembly.

Just wondered if I need more advance to get even more power not rpms.

I really don't need them

Most guys do run 34-38 degrees advanced of static timing … I heard up to 42 degrees but I would NOT recommend going THAT lean. (Kind-a nutz if you ask me)

I would definitely try rolling in some more timing… Keep a close eye on your temps. If you’re already hitting 180 on a heavy track you may want to jet up a touch too while trying to dial in more timing.

bring the timing up to 36 degrees, adjust it with the engine running @ 2500 rpm,Then double check it @ 3000. If ya think it runs good where ya got it set now, wait till ya get it where it should be.

Adv 34 deg

thanks for imput on this timing issue.

Just too insure myself,?

By marking the 34 on the balancer and bringing that mark up to 0 on timing tab is the correct way???

That is the way I been doing at 20 deg advance!

And another question is should I put a new harmonic on the engine to ensure no slippage has taken affect?

I couldn't even begin to think how old this thing is. It is pretty ruff can't even c the degree marks without a bright light and close up looking at the stamping in the balancer

Thanks

You have been a big help

Insurance cost a lttle but saving a motor is worth huge $$$$$

glad there are people who still help each other

Yes that is correct. As far as the balancer, throw that thing away and get an
new SFI certified performance balancer. Such as these.

Or even this is better than what you have now.

MAKE FOR SURE it's SFI rated!!!! I lost a really nice 406 due to my ignorance on the subject and went with a Fluid dampener once that was NOT SFI rated. It was only a dampener and didn’t do anything for the harmonics either. Snapped the snout right of a forged steel crank and everything else went right behind it.
