Inside Line Promotions - MOUNT POCONO, Pa. (Oct. 30, 2018) - Joey Amantea took a leap forward in 2018 during his second full season behind the wheel of a 600cc micro sprint.

The 14-year-old opened his season with a win on April 21 at Hamlin Speedway in Hamlin, Pa., during a wingless event.

"I started second and got the lead right away and led every lap of the race," he said. "I think I lapped half the field. It was a good day."

Amantea and his family owned team elected not to chase points this year, instead focusing on the best races that would help the team improve.

"This year we didn't care much about the points," he said. "We just mixed and matched all the races and we weren't racing for points. Despite that and missing six races at Linda's Speedway (in Jonestown, Pa.) we finished 11th in the wingless points."

Amantea is pleased with his progress at Linda's Speedway as well as many other bullrings throughout his home state of Pennsylvania.

"Action Track USA (in Kutztown, Pa.) has always been our most difficult track," he said. "Last year I couldn't make a show and this year I made every show but two. I finished in the top 10 twice, top 15 three other times and three additional times in the top 20. They usually have 70 cars in the 600s a week. This was a fantastic year there and at Linda's. We led 14 laps of a race at Linda's, but we didn't have enough gear and got passed to finish second. Compared to last year and the beginning of this season we started off barely making the top 15 in wingless and now we're fighting for top fives."

The eighth grader will take that momentum into his return to action during the famed Tulsa Shootout, which is held in Tulsa, Okla., Jan. 2-5. He will compete in both the winged and non-wing outlaw divisions.
