Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 14, 2006) – Already nine regions strong in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series will continue to expand in 2007.
With several new Regions in the works, the first to be formally announced is the Coastal Region, which will encompass the southern portions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as well as the Florida panhandle.
The new ASCS Coastal Region will be under the directorship of Keith Johnson, who has built the ASCS Gulf South Region into a series' staple since the Gulf South's inception in 2002. Johnson will continue to direct the Gulf South Region as well.
Johnson informs that a handful of tracks have already agreed to ASCS Coastal Region dates in 2007, including Southern Raceway in Milton, FL, Southern Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS, and Deep South Speedway in Loxley, AL.
The ASCS Coastal Region will also take on the ASCS Gulf South Region in several challenge events next year, including stops at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX, and Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, TX.
Negotiations are under way with at least another half dozen other tracks that have expressed a strong interest in hosting the ASCS Coastal Region in 2007.
A number of drivers throughout the Region have also shown great interest in the new ASCS Coastal Region, which is expected to have a schedule of approximately 14 to 16 events in its inaugural season.
The ASCS Coastal Region will join the ASCS fold, which already includes the Gulf South Region, Mid-South Region, Midwest Region, Northern Plains Region, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain Region, Sooner Region, Southern Tour and Sprints on Dirt in addition to the National Tour.
In 2006, the 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series presents approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada.
