RACINE, OHIO- Only three AMRA tracks were able to race last weekend because of the weeklong rains and Friday's downpours. Friday's rain seeled the deal on most nearly every regional track, however, Beckley Speedway decided to host a make-up race Saturday. Skyline raced in lieu of Midway Friday night despite the rains, and Atomic had a great show on Saturday.
At Beckley Motor Speedway, the Super Late Models brought a strong 16 car field for the fans to sit on the edge of their seats and watch. Wayne Hughes continued his fast time dominance. He set a blazing fast time of 13.137. The heat races were very competitive and racy as the fast times stuck even during race time. Ricky Williams won heat 1 and Harold Redman Jr. dominated heat 2. In the feature time were still quick as the drivers were still running 13.5's! Harold Redman Jr. had his car on a rail and went on to lead the whole feature. Wayne Hughes who started in the 3rd place seemed like he may have had something for him but ran out of time. As they do every week, Hughes and Williams put on an awesome show battling side by side for a long time. The car to watch watch Travis Brookover's 12B who started way back in the 14th place after a problem in the heat race. He battled his way side by side all the way to a high of 4th at once before falling back and finishing 6th. The top 5 were the #28R of Harold Redman followed by #1H Wayne Hughes and #12 Ricky Williams, 4th was #17N of Kenney Newhouse and rounding out the top 5 was the #115 of Zack Dohm with his 525 crate motor! All in all a great show with 16 very strong late models on hand!

The Modifieds were the first show after intermission and raindrops fell for just a minute. Before we get to the feature though we must mention that the other Hughes, Tate Hughes, continue his dominance in qualifying too. He set an amazingly fast time of a 14.432. Almost breaking Keith Bills track record. Tate went on to win heat 1, heat 2 was taken by Joe Cox and heat 3 by Joe Meadows in his #33. The modifieds had the biggest turn out of the night with 18 cars. In the feature as stated before raindrops fell just as we were getting ready to start. The race even with the rain falling went caution free! Tate Hughes dominated the show early, but lap traffic proved difficult and caught Cox and Meadows up to put on a heck of a show to the finish. Tate was blocking and Cox and Meadows were trying everything they could to figure out how to get around Hughes. Coming to the checkers they would be 3 wide at the line for first, but who would come out on top? It would be Tate Hughes leading the whole race followed by a gap of .210 the #41 of Joe Cox and the #33 of Joe Meadows ended up 3rd only .719 off the win. Rounding out the top 5 were the #11G of David Godfrey and the #17 of Jason Cochran. This was one amazing race that was one for the ages for the open wheel modified class.

ATOMIC Speedway
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO- One of the most competitive nights of racing in the history of Atomic Speedway concluded with a near photo finishas Bob Crace, Jr. won a heated battle on a last lap pass of Harley Martin to claim the C & M Racing Equipment Sport Mod main. Six of the night's eight heat races went down to the wire, setting the stage for a quartet of barn-burning finishes in the fourth feature events. Even the kids put on a great show in the bicycle races and the festive Kid' Night activities.
Vandalia, Ohio's Jimmy Stinson, aboard the Jamie Miller-owned 6s, claimed the biggest win of the night by outdistancing early leader Ryan Broughton in the Pine Tree Towing and Recovery 410 Sprint Car main. Kenny "Worth the Price of Admission" Johnson lived up to his namesake by holding off the challenges of K-C Burdette for a photo finish in the Advanced Services AMRA Octane Modified 20-lap main and Dean Boyd pulled off his fourth win of the year in the Street Stock main after a torrid race-long battle with Adam Jones.

Kenny Johnson, Mineral Wells, WV--the five time AMRA champion-- is usually the man to watch coming off the tail. Johnson was equally spectacular in starting on the pole, only to have to survive the challenges of Parkersburg, WV driver K-C Burdette. Burdette had won the first heat in a last-to-first place run, then determined his own fate in the feature with a spin on lap six that sent him to the tail.
Johnson meanwhile had to fend off Dave Fireball Pinkerton, who along with Matt Holcomb and Doug Adkins made it an exciting four-way race. Pinkerton at one time shuffled back to fourth, but recovered nicely to regain second. Matt Holcomb had a great run going much of the night. Doug Adkins moved into second, then fell off the pace and back to sixth before charging back to fourth at the finish.
Jimmy Lennex at one point seemed to be out of the chase, but came on strong at the finish, while Dave McWilliams, Eric Arledge, and Bob Crace, Jr. each ran consistently well.
Johnson appeared to soar into another county in the early going, but had his lead decimated by a pair of cautions, one of which was by Burdette on lap six. Burdette charged from the tail of the 21-car starting field and into third on the 16th circuit, then second a lap later. That set up a firestorm of a finish as Burdette twice bore past Johnson only to have Johnson dive low in one to half Burdette's final challenge. Burdette gave it another try blitzing alongside Johnson at the finish with Johnson winning by a nose-plate.
Johnson said, "I love this track and I love these fans. I felt kind of defeated coming here tonight as we have fought engine problems for a week. It didn't run right last night, it didn't run right in the heat, and it didn't run right in the feature, but we had enough to get to victory lane. K-C beat me last night and I was second, so it felt good to be on top tonight."
Rounding out the top ten were Johnson, Burdette, Dave Fireball Pinkerton, Matt Holcomb, Doug Adkins, Jimmy Lennex, Dave McWilliams, Eric Arledge, and Bob Crace, Jr.

Skyline Hosts Midway Event
Power Outage to Blame
STEWART, OHIO-The changing of the guard has not yet taken place! At least not entirely! Veteran Andy Bond claimed one for the seasoned race fans as he flat-footed to a win in the Curtis 53c car after a race-long battle with Tyler Carpenter. In the modifieds, K-C Burdette, in the Jimmy Fordyce 4c rung in the new with a win for the younger set. That too was a grizzly battle with 5-time AMRA champion Kenny Johnson. The next night at Atomic the duo reversed their roles with Johnson fending off Burdette for the win.
Bond grabbed the lead early, but had a mirror full of Carpenter, Mr. Consistent Ronnie Mayle, and Harold Redman, Jr. Heavy rains left the track fast, smooth, and tacky. The high speeds entertained the crowd and made quick finishes of the competitive events.
Like in a video game, Bond climbed to the expert level and brought home the win. That came desptite the daring efforts of the Kamikazee Kid Carpenter who blitzed to second ahead of Mayle, Redman, and Ralph Withem.
In the modified main, K-C Burdette -- the veteran of the Late Model ranks-- honed his modified driving skills to near perfection. A stout field of cars was on hand as has been the case all season long on the fast 3/8 mile oval. The 4-c was blistering fast, but crafty veteran Kenny Johnson was right there for the duration giving chase and looking for the win. Burdette outraced Johnson and Kyle Bond. Bond, the third generation driver, put forth a great effort in holding off J.P. Roberts and fast timer Jess Hartman.
The top ten were 1. 4 KC Burdette , 2. 1J Kenny Johnson , 3. 10 Kyle Bond , 4. 9R JP Roberts , 5. 5 Jess Hartman , 6. B4 Jeremy Blake , 7. 01 Andy Bond , 8. C7 Casey Fritz , 9.000 Robert Garnes , and 10. 73 Rick Venham.

Atomic to host Hall of Fame
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Some of the biggest names in racing have passed through the gates of Atomic Speedway, including Indy 500 and Daytona 500 veterans, however, the success of the storied 3/8 mile high-banked oval lies in its grass-roots, locally dedicated racing pioneers. Saturday, May 24 many of those racing greats will be honored with the induction of the 2014 K-C/Atomic Speedway Hall of Fame inductions. In addition to the reunion-type atmosphere, race fans will be treated to a pair of $2,500 to win features: a 25-lap $2,500 main for the 410 Outlaw Sprints and a 25-lap $2,500 run for the Late models, plus Advanced Services Modifieds.
The first class inducted in April of 2010 included Audie Swartz, Delmas Conley, Dean Knittle, Sam Erwin, Dan Reno; Jr. Spencer, Myrl Williams, Charlie McCann, The Smalley Family, Bud and Joe Frazier, Wayne McGuire and members of The Chillicothe Stock Car Racing Association. Inducted in 2011 were George Habour, Bobby Morgan, George Branscom, Bob LeMaster, Bob Crace Sr., Bob Crace Jr. and Stan Jefferies.
Spike Spears, Jim Meeker, Harry Martin, Dale Jones, Gerald Palmer and the Karshner Family will be inducted into the KC/Atomic Hallof Fame this Saturday Night May 24th.
“The Golden Spike”, Spike Spears, Chillicothe, was always a fan favorite due to his contagious smile and always upbeat attitude. Spears will lead the way once again as the early sprint and modified ace makes his way to Victory Lane once again as a Hall of Famer. Spears was probably most noted for his legendary win in the "Buckeye 100" in 1971 when he beat a contingent of Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Northern Ohio drivers.
Jimmy Meeker, Chillicothe, affectionately known as "The Cigar Kid" is the next inductee. The night that Meeker told fellow racers and fans he was hanging up his helmet surely surprised people; what was not a surprise was that at the end of the night Jim was once again in the winners circle, a place he was very familiar with. This racing legend won many races in the supermodified and sprint car division and was one of a very select few to go out with a win.
Harry Martin the man behind many of the early write-ups and photos helped put “The Atomic” on the map with his stories and photos. Martin had a keen eye for capturing that perfect shot of cars at speed and an eye that captured those special moments in victory lane. His photography and writing skills let the rest of the world what Chillicothe area fans knew--Atomic Speedway was one of the finest racing venues in the nation.
Dale Jones was a pioneer in open wheel racing and aided in the start of Atomic Speedway. Jones was an early racer and Chillicothe business man who actually raced in the first event at the fabled high banks on Blain Hwy and later went on to be a successful sprint and midget car owner in USAC. Some of Myrl Williams' early cars were driven by Dale Jones.
“Palmer to the judges stand” was something nearly every race fan heard for decades at Atomic Speedway. Gerald Palmer was one of the fixtures that made Atomic Speedway click smoothly every Saturday night. If it needed repaired, Palmer was the man who took care of it, and always with a smile on his face. From anything from the backstretch lights to the phone in the ticket booth, he had them working every Saturday night.
For a time Atomic Speedway became K-C Raceway--- and gladly so. The Karshner-Cooper connecton in the namesake K-C Raceway brought the track back to life in 1995 after a year lay-off in 1984. When Atomic Speedway was setting empty it was the entire Karshner family that got together with Chillicothe businessman Ralph Cooper to purchase and resurrect the speed plant. It was under their ownership that the keystone events such as “The Night The Stars Come Out” and “The Freedom 40” came to be.
For more information please call 740-703-9749 or 740-663-4141 or visit the Atomic Speedway website at <<< www.atomicspeedway.net >>> Atomic is located 12 miles South of Chillicothe, Ohio off SR 23, two miles out Blain Highway between Chillicothe, Ohio and Waverly, Ohio at Alma.
Atomic is a Hoosier only track. Check the website for rule details and the NDRL site for the weekend tire rule for late models which sees the NDRL return July 25 and July 26.
