I did a little research and found this is a very common occurence....maybe these 3 responses from a forum will help.......

I think I"d be cleaning and replacing fuses. The only jack problems I ever had was similar to that (turned out the clicking noise was just the switch) and I found a leaky fuse holder was the culprit.

In addition to checking the fuses as mentioned above, make sure you have a good ground. Most are grounded via the bolted connection to the frame with a serrated washer, and that can get corroded and not carry the full load needed. I had to eventually install a dedicated ground wire on mine to get it to work properly. At least try tightening the mounting bolts ....

I'm sure that the issues is NOT electrically related, as I have located the issue inside the gear box, there is a set of gears with a brass bushing in the center of the unit. When you flip the gears over there is a couple of shims, copper/brass washers, and triangular shaped key which sets into the bottom of the gear. I'm assuming this is some sort of clutch like assembly. Anyway the issues is all this stuff is held together with a retaining clip which is supposed to have a nice grove to set into on the gear shaft. However that grove has chipped away, causing the gear NOT to engage creating the clicking sound. I notice little bits of metal pieces in the surrounding grease when I opened the case and knew right then the problem was going to be something broke.
