Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (March 17, 2014) – With the official Canyon Speedway Park season opener on March 29 drawing ever closer, one more big “pre-season” event is on the docket for this Saturday night at the popular Phoenix-area racetrack.

While the USAC Southwest Sprint Cars take center stage on the 1/3-mile clay oval in the March 29 season opener, the facility undergoes a transformation for this Saturday night’s Arizona Figure 8 Championships.

In addition to the wild action of Figure 8 racing, this Saturday’s card will also include Autocross and Spectator Races. Saturday’s racing action gets under way at 7:00 p.m.

After a year-long absence, the Figure 8 Series returned to Canyon Speedway Park last October with Joe Vlasity taking top honors in the championship event that features factory stock type cars on the Figure 8 course.

Autocross features Renegade and Hornet type cars competing on a specially designed road course using portions of the Figure 8 track as well portions of the 3/8-mile clay oval. Chris McCurdy, Jr., rebounded from an early flip to score last October’s Autocross triumph.

Spectator Races are open to anyone wanting to test their skills against another competitor in street legal grudge races. Each driver competes with a street legal and licensed vehicle against another driver with the winner staying on the track to take on the next challenger with the final winner pocketing half the total entry fees and all the bragging rights.

Tickets for Saturday’s Arizona Figure 8 Championships are just $15, with a $2 discount for Military, Seniors and Students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20.
