615886]seen alot of these cars, roll bars welded, or bolted to floor pans, the cars go too fast, especially at tri city and i 55, in the event of a high speed accident, the cars tend to shred or rip apart at the floor pans thus eliminating the roll cage you thought was protecting you[/B]. wasnt there a thread on here not long ago about this very thing where the racer unfortunately died, I dont believe it was local though. racing is very dangerous, as we all know, and i believe these cars raise the odds of being hurt while driving one ten fold or more. again, jmo.

Just last season I was in a VERY rough accident. I ended up flipping up and over another car that came down off the wall and into the front of me. We literally ended up side-by-side, on our driver's side doors (see pics on i-55 site 9-6-08)... I raced every single weekend at I-55 last season and first off our speed is nothing to the upper class cars. We might be going 55-60mph. That's what my speedometer was reading on a good night with a smooth track. But what do the Mods or Sportsman do as far as speed...and then wrecking? Now that's a "high speed accident". As far as our roll cages go, I can only speak for my self.. if mine wasn't properly made/installed, do you think I'd be crazy enough to go out and risk myself, no I wouldn't. Or for that fact I have a husband, son and daughter who also race in the class as well... I won't risk them either. We will be running 6-7 cars this season at Pevely and hopefully Tri city, and I can tell you we've taken every step necessary to ensure the safety of each of our drivers. As for the other Pro-4 drivers, I can't and won't speak for them. But I am sure they don't want to get hurt any more than I do. And like the other person posted on here...Our class generally has THE FEWEST cautions, restarts and accidents of any class running. Sorry we just aren't as flashy as the big boys... nothing against you other class drivers...I personally think your great and wanna be like you someday!;)

Keep the 4 cylinders!!

Please keep the 4 cylinders cars and go back to calling them "Hornets".
They are a great support class, fun to watch and that is what this sport is supposed to be...FUN.
Where else can a 14 year old get the experience of driving and working on a race car and not spend thousands of dollars to do it. Don't get me wrong I know it can end up costing you thousands. BUT you can start out with a low budget car. It is a great way to start.
And to all of the people who get up and go to the bathroom and consession stand during the Hornet race they are also the people who leave right after their classes feature is over, it is the loyal hornet and street stock fans who are still patiently waiting to see their race.

SAVE THE HORNETS !!!

can em.there was an accident I believe in florida where a car was hit and the cage and driver separated from the car. When someone gets hurt in one of these cars the track operator will get his pants sued off him.

I say save em...

Everyone want to bring up the fact that the car driver in flordia was killed because of this class....Yes it was a tragedy that this Young man was killed and everyones thoughts and prayers are with them. But oin the other hand this kinda stuff happens when you put anything on dirt at these speeds...Not just the Hornets...Look at Randy Korte, he had a bad night in his latemodel and almost had to quite racing but now he is back... Kid named Cory did a barrel roll in a hornet last year and he's fine...I personally did a backflip in my hornet at highlands track last year and my cage didn't budge a bit..Just cause some people are lazy doesn't mean that all the drivers are lazy..There are alot of drivers that take pride in thier cars, so don't hold one accident against the hornet drivers...I am moving up to a bomber this year but I wish the best to all the classes this year... ALL THIS IS JMO

I'm pretty sure I remember a mod driver getting killed somewhere down south in 2008 too.

Look, serious injury and death is an inherent risk to racing. These drivers know what risk they are taking.

Likewise, every year I hear of atleast one pitcher in a high school baseball game get torched by a line drive back at him from a metal bat and gets killed. Yet, we still let children play baseball with metal bats.

The incidents causing death are extremely isolated. People are racing these cars all over the country and 1 person died last year. While one death is one too many, I definately believe that if these cars were as dangerous as some claim that number would be much higher.

It seems to me that if one is looking to speed up the program, targeting the class that likely causes the fewest yellows is a bit misguided.

Generally speaking, I think most tracks across the country need to take a look at reducing the number of classes they run. But the Factory Stocks put on as good of racing as any class at Tri City. And more to the point, they put on some of the cleanest racing.

If they want to speed up the program, how about black-flagging drivers who deliberately bring out the yellow on the first lap because they didn't get a good start? Or making the class that caused the most yellows the week before run last all night the following week?
I like your ideas,Brandon,,very good thoughts.

I think pro 4 cars are dangerous,

I'll be the 1st to admit, I have seen some 4cyl race cars that were rolling death traps. But, on the other hand, I've seen some that were very well constructed, that I would have felt very safe in. I think it all boils down to what the tech men allow. If I were a tech man, these cars would be held to the highest standard in safety just like the rest. No I don't think this class should be a serious as some take it. But, when it comes to safety, you can't be serious enough!!!

I also agree that if the 4cyls want to stay, they need to support the track. Thats goes for every class though. But, you never know with KG, the sportsman supported him well and he ditched them for a class that still doesn't bring in as many as the sportsman did.

In 2005 I brought one of my freshly built cars to have its debut at Tri-City. While I was waiting for the night to begin Kevin Gundaker himself came by my pits to inspect my car. He went over the car with a fine tooth comb that night and even had me fix something before I raced it because he didn’t think it was safe enough. I have been racing at his track for four years now and my cars get inspected every year before they get to race. Kevin is doing his part on safety and I’m sure some slip by, but the drivers need to be responsible for themselves also.

Look around at most racetracks, some can't afford Late Models and have gone to just Crates as the top class, the class that is the most exciting is the modified class.

the hornets, usually bring a lot of cars each week. Now looking from a promoter/ track owner, if you have 25 hornets, that is 25 pits passes, with out the pit crew, if you have 12 late models, that is twice the money from the hornets and they get paid less...lots less.

so in the future, with the economy the way it is, the Late Models, might be the next class to "bite the dust" and the crate late model will probably be the top class. JMO

And I LIKED it when they ran the hornet feature before intermission, no one left before they raced.

I still say run them as intermission if they are at risk to be dropped. Myself I usually stay and watch even if they run last. Racing a latemodel I rarely get to watch much of anything anymore. But the few weeks I did go and just watch last year after breaking a motor the first of July, I stayed and watched em'. I'd put a time limit on the mods. though. Everywhere I go that has B mods they usually waste more time than anything wrecking or having poor starts ect. Could see why some tracks dont run them anymore. When I went to Tri-city I really dont remember what the holdups were? I thought it all moved pretty well.
