3 injured in Jacksonville Raceway accident

BY MARIA NAGLE
Journal-Courier
Three spectators were injured Friday night when a sprint car was knocked, during a race, into their direction as they were standing behind a fence in front of the grandstand at the Jacksonville Raceway.

Jacksonville Police Lt. Joe Tapscott said prior to officers' arrival, one person -- who was the most critically injured of the three -- was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Passavant Area Hospital. That spectator was then airlifted to a Springfield hospital. He said two others were taken to Passavant and are being treated there. Because police were still gathering details of the accidents, Lt. Tapscott said he had little information available about the accident about 9:30 p.m.

A spectator, who did not want to be identified, told the Journal-Courier that as a sprint car was coming out of Turn Four, another car knocked the sprint car, sending it into the direction of the grandstand. The sprint car hit a fence and then struck four or five people standing with their backs toward the race track, said the spectator, of Springfield.

Thoughts and prayers are with the victims and also the driver involved. I have known drivers that have hit people with their car before and it does a number on them. Pray for recover for all those involved and those who witnessed this accident. God bless.

Just came from the race track. A sprint was tagged by another sprint, he lost control coming out of turn 4 and hit the small concrete wall and catch fence where people are allowed to stand behind a fenced in area.
Yes people were seriously injured and they are in my prayers.

Five spectators were injured Friday night when a sprint car was knocked, during a race, into their direction as they were standing behind a fence in front of the grandstand at the Jacksonville Raceway.

Of those injured, three were transported by ambulances to Passavant Area Hospital, said Jacksonville Police Lt. Joe Tapscott, the shift commander at the scene.

They are: Bob Baker, of Springfield, who was the most critically injured and later airlifted to a Springfield hospital; James Hurley, of Springfield, and Matt Icenogle, of Chatham, who were still being treated at Passavant, as of press deadline.

Scott Weakley, of Springfield, drove himself to the hospital and, at press deadline, was waiting to be treated for the injuries he suffered. S. Dale Carter, of Chatham, was treated at the scene, Lt. Tapscott said.

No information about the sprint car driver was available, including whether he was injured, Lt. Tapscott said.

Because police were still gathering details, Lt. Tapscott said he had little information available late Friday night about the accident about 9:30 p.m. at the raceway located on the Morgan County Fairgrounds.

Contrary to rumors that began circulating after the accident, no one was killed; nor did anyone have any limbs severed in the accident, Lt. Tapscott said.

This happened right in front of us, and as bad as this was, it could have been a whole lot worse. You hear a lot of track pre-race invocations with the usual request that God, "watch over the fans, workers, drivers," etc. I absolutely think He was doing just that last night.

What made this situation even more dangerous is that the lead pack was up in turn one, so most folks weren't watching the rear of the field, where this was triggered. Once the car went airborne, it was like it all happened in slow motion, with everyone thinking OH @##$!

I will say this much: the catch fence did its job, as it kept the car out of the actual stands, as it was stopped in the walkway. And thank God, no one was pinned under the car.
