Best way to join a local team? Not as a driver

I have always enjoyed watching racing and more recently have gotten into going to races locally and really enjoyed the atmosphere.

During the winter months being cooped up inside and thinking about the upcoming season, i figure what better way to go to more races and be more involved is to jump on with a local team and help out with anything i can and start to build up some knowledge and continue to help out more.

So, what would be the best way to find a team in need of some help?

Most everyone could use the help. Just get in contact with anyone and let them know you want to help.

Most would be willing to take you on your offer.

This is a good first step. Make another post speaking to what you know, or, what you want to learn. Are you able to make every race? What track/tracks are you near? What interest you?

Dependability will be huge for any team that opens their pit to you. You won't be paid, but you'll learn something new every night, which could be of great value to you some day.

Good luck!

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it looks like the OP is looking to go to work. Why don't one of you guys find out if he's close to your shop and put him to work?

I posted a similar ad about 3 years ago, and there's definitely teams always looking. I got to do Summer Nationals twice, it was a pretty cool experience. You'll definitely get some opportunities if you know at least the basics and are willing to put in the time and effort. Most bigger late model teams could always use a tire guy or somebody to take care of day to day maintenance. Post the type of gig you're looking for and your experience and you'll get something!

This is a good way to get ideas as to who you could work with. Dont get discouraged if someone doesnt want you immediately turning wrenches on their car. Drivers are a fickle being and they are real particular about who touches their car, mainly because they want to know their car wont come apart at speed. Best thing I can say is show up to the race tracks on play days and talk to ppl. Maybe offer to scrape mud (grunt work but EXTREMELY important). As time goes youll meet more and more ppl and learn more about the race cars. The pay sucks, but theres not too many of us that do what we do for the money. But if your anything like me, you wont care. I myself have always loved racing and have made it a point thru the years to be around race cars as much as i possibly can. If you head and heart are in the right place, youll be fine. Good to see someone wanting to get involved.

As a follow up since it has been asked quite a bit and some more information.

I am currently in Belleville, IL. I did not expect to jump right into someones car immediately as i know how people can be with who works on their vehicles, but would hope to be an extra hand and help out where needed and learn. i also did not expect to get paid and to me it would just be more involvement with racing and a huge learning experience(because why not get something back for the work as well)

yes sir we can always use a extra hand getting ready to go thru the help application pile , we can slip yours to the top lol. ;)

here is what you do-come over-work like a dog on my second rate junk so I (@70yo)can climb in my car and make 20 laps-collect my money and go home --but then if I get a second wind and finish up front then you get to share the glory --Lenny FIREBALL Garson --- like they say IT AINT OVER TILL DA FAT LADY FARTS OR SINGS what ever
