Fireball... you made me look that one up. The guy crashed out by Mike Brannon (Clark) was called "Bullet" Joe Garson, played by Joe Youghal. Did a driver crash the car for Joe or was Joe a driver? There are a number of (real) racing drivers in the movie, I only know the west coast guys or Indy stars.
To Please a Lady is a good racing movie, considering most are junk. The big appeal for the film now is the historical racing footage. Clark was a gear head of sorts and both he and Stanwyck were at Indy for the race. The film has a big politically incorrect moment when Clark Gable slaps around Barbara Stanwyck, she digs it, and they embrace and kiss... 1950's foreplay, knock your woman around and your good to go.
