I-44 Speedway
LEBANON, Mo. - It was a hot night of racing, both in the weather and on the track at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway on Saturday night. The Stacker 2 Mid-America Racing Series came to the high banks of the speedway for the second of four scheduled appearances.
Bill Frye of Greenbriar, Ark. won his second MARS victory. Frye received second place at the special added-money Late Model show at the I-44 Speedway on June 25 and said that that run helped his finish Saturday night.
“I really feel that show helped us,” Frye said. “The highside felt really good. The more cars (that ran) the bottom, (they) started throwing marbles up. They kind of got the bottom cleaned up where you could run around the infield so I got there on the bottom and I think I got better again down there.”
Thirty-two Late Models checked in for the $3,000-to-win purse. Twenty-two qualified for the feature race.
Steve Rushin of Poplar Bluff, Mo. and Leslie Essary of Crane, Mo. received provisional tailback positions in the feature race. Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Ark., Brad Looney of Republic, Mo., Dane Dacus of Memphis and Jordan Jones all qualified through their B Features for the A Feature race.
With a cloud of dust, the 22 Late Models stood on the gas. Aurora’s Justin Wells, one of the MARS rookie drivers, received the pole position followed by Frye, Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, Ark., Springfield’s Terry Phillips and Brian Schutt of Lebanon.
Frye took the lead by lap 3 and never let it go.
Phillips fell to fifth, driving the highside groove as Schutt fell to sixth.
Joey Mack of Benton, Mo. drove a good run from 11th to challenge Phillips for fourth place.
The first quarter of the race had an appeal to side-by-side driving as Wells and Sullivan struggled for second, Wells and Phillips raced for fourth place and Schutt and Jeff Floyd of Walnut Ridge, Ark. battled for sixth place.
Looney also was in top-10 position by lap 12, starting 19th in the feature.
Frye hit lap traffic on the 13th lap. Sullivan took the highside on lap 14 to take second from Wells. Mack had also passed Phillips and was in fourth place.
Brandon McCormick of Lebanon also was in the top 10, making an inside run on Phillips in fifth place.
The 24th lap gave way for the feature’s first caution.
Wallace went out of the race with a flat right rear tire, but came out to go tailback for causing the caution.
After an attempted restart, Jones spun around in turn three before all cars could complete a full lap.
At the restart it was Frye, Sullivan, Wells, Mack and Phillips in the top five positions. Mack was bumped around in the start and fell back several positions, allowing Phillips to gain momentum and take third on the inside of Wells.
On lap 30, Frye was hugging the inside of the track as Phillips was also trying his hand at the inside against Sullivan.
Phillips had closed the gap between him and Sullivan.
Phillips appeared smoother on the corners, but Sullivan had more horsepower on the straightaways.
Sullivan held his second-place finish to the end; Phillips received third.
Wells received fourth place and McCormick received fifth, rounding out the top 5.
After having some mechanical problems with his car on June 25, Frye said he seemed to have some plaguing electrical problems this week as well.
“I’m not sure whether we got a bad ground problem or something,” Frye said. “We got some electronic gauges and every time you’d start the motor you’d have to wiggle the wires on the back of them to make them work. That was really the only problem.”
