Billy Faust Caught Cheating at I-55

The whole situation with Bloomquist, tracks threatening to remove sanction to open up the tire rules, etc. resulted in the tire rule being changed that weekend during Speedweeks. From what I've read, AARA admitted that the tire rule in their book was not right, or documented. And the drivers were not told about it in the meeting. So, I stand by Billy Faust and say he did the right thing. He bolted on a UMP legal 30 at a UMP track. AARA admitted their mistake, and have taken steps to clarify the rule. I-55's site now lists the 20-40 rule on the front page in big, orange letters.

May I please make the suggestion that AARA and I-55 Raceway open up the tire rules for the big shows, like the Summernationals, Tri-Track Challenge, and the Pepsi Nationals. With the selection of all 4 compounds available, it'll be easier for racers to choose a tire to suit track conditions, and may keep the track from taking as much rubber, too.

I DISAGREE.. Why make your local racer buy more tires of various compounds? Those softer tires just lead to more rubbering up conditions.

I agree Jimmy- People tend to bash AARA but they forget they are one of the few organizations trying to keep the cost down where they can for the drivers and car owners..... I say bring the big boys on and let them play by our rules . No reason a local should spend a fortune on tires when it is not needed for 2-3 nights out of the year.

Terrible rule anyway for 4 compounds. I praise I55 and TriCity... If I remember the rule correctly on the UMP racing website, it says nothing about the track discretion. It just says 4 compounds are legal this year. As a late model, he has read the UMP rule book and abides by it, why pay attention to the track? UMP has unionized the rules, that is what they do.

UMP Tire Rule right from www.umpracing.com

13. TIRES
13.1. Hoosier LM10, LM20, LM30 & LM40 tires only! Each weekly sanctioned track may choose which of these tires to allow.
13.2. Only approved tires may be used for competition.
13.3. Max tire hoop width is sixteen and three quarters inches (16.75”).
13.4. No defacing or refacing of tire lettering permitted.
13.5. No tire softening permitted.
13.6. Changing, vulcanizing, or altering tires is strictly prohibited. Penalty may include up to 6 month suspension from any UMP or WoO sanctioned event and the loss of all points for the season.

There is one problem with not allowing the weekly racers to run all four compounds, it's when the larger shows come to town and allow all four, you don't know how your car will react to the other compounds (10s & 30s) and the guys that have been using them all season wax your ***.

the four compounds was also to stop the softening of tires.the durometer specs still were allowing for softening.

Personally, I think we should run D55's on all 4 corners. Less cost for everyone, Tire Mfg. only need one set up, and makes it fair for all racers. JMO.

Do Ya'll Remember When If A Track Had Your Ump Class You Were Legal? Now Days You Still Have To Check The Rules And Make Sure What You Can Run Or If You're Legal. Instead Of Just Ump, They Need To Add And S To Ump And Call It Sump... Somewhat United Midwest Promoters.

Now that AARA has stated the tire rule, Belle Clair will probably be following with the same tire choice.

Without making the announcement, UMP set the rules. Billy did nothing outside of UMP rules and thus was not DQ'ed. Now that the rules are on the table, the costs will be better for the local racer. No need for the extra compounds. 20's and 40's make sense and keeps the cost down for the racers.

In my opinion, Billy Faust didn't cheat.

AARA did the right thing......twice. They accepted responsibility for failing to communicate the tire rule and they did not penalize the driver.

Racing this Saturday night at I-55 Raceway.

Amen Pitdrifter. If that's the UMP rules, and you're running the UMP sanction, then it should be that way. Just because there's four compounds out there doesn't mean you have to run them.

I agree.

Allied didn't acknowledge it at the drivers meeting, nor had it written ANYWHERE. They made a mistake and they took care of it the best way possible.

Kudos to Allied

Faust tours around a bit he should have known to check. All tracks discretion is the sign in the Ump rulebook. Go to I44 or Monett you have to run either 40s or wrs2 55's. All tracks are different on tire rules. Ump just sets the general rules.
