WEST PLAINS MO. Scott Bloomquist became a two-time winner of the Show-Me 100 at the West Plains Motor Speedway. Bloomquist had to wait eight years before he became a repeat winner, but it was worth the way as he left the 11th annual event $37,000 richer. Bloomquist took the lead from early race leader, Dale McDowell on the 32nd lap, and wasn't headed from that point. Rain delayed the finale until Sunday night, the third time that has happened in this event in it's eleven year history.
Steve Francis set the top qualifying time on Friday, then backed up his qualifying time with the first heat race win on Sunday, putting him on the pole. Dale McDowell was on his outside, and took the lead as the green flag fell, with Francis, Terry Phillips, Duke Whiseant, and Marshall Green falling in behind.
Before things could even get started, a five car pile-up occurred in turn four on the second lap. Skip Arp, Jimmy Mars, Ray Cook, Dan Schlieper, and Bill Frye were all involved. Frye's car was the most seriously damaged, and Frye did not return.
Duke Whiseant got by Phillips on the restart, and Bloomquist passed Green for fifth. Bloomquist was on the move, getting around Phillips for fourth in turn four on lap three. Out front, McDowell was pacing the field by ten carlengths, and had expanded that to 15 carlenghts by lap seven.
Phillips re-gained fourth, getting past Whiseant in turn four on lap 16. McDowell was already starting to lap slower cars by lap 17. It didn't take long for Francis and Bloomquist to catch McDowell, and the three were nose to tail working traffic. Francis and Bloomquist were side by side on lap 20, just behind McDowell. Phillips was rapidly closing ground on the frontrunners, and there was a foursome for the lead by lap 25.
McDowell and Francis were side by side dueling for the lead on lap 27. Bloomquist got his nose under Francis in turn two on lap 29. McDowell, Francis, and Bloomquist went three wide for the lead on lap 31, with Bloomquist coming away with second. Bloomquist then got around McDowell for the top spot running the bottom coming out of two on lap 32.
Rick Aukland brought out a lap 35 caution, as he was stalled in turn two. Francis got by McDowell for second on the restart, but Freddy Smith caused the yellow flag to wave on lap 38, as he was pulled up in turn three.
Terry Phillips overcame McDowell for third on the backstretch on lap 39, but the third caution in just eleven laps waved on lap 46 for Richie Tosh, who was backed into the outside wall in turn one.
Duke Whiseant moved past McDowell for fourth on the restart, then Marshall Green drove by McDowell for fifth one lap later. Out front, Bloomquist had built a ten carlength advantage on Francis by lap 51. Dan Schlieper took the fifth spot from Green on lap 53.
Francis was slowly starting to cut into Bloomquist's lead, and the pair were close again on lap 59. Phillips was also making a charge, and the front three were just running with a few carlengths separating them. Bloomquist was starting to get back into traffic by lap 70, and immediately used that to his advantage, breaking back to a 10 carlength advantage dicing through the slower cars.
Billy Moyer came from his seventh row starting spot, and was fifth by lap 70, then improved past Whiseant for fourth in turn four on lap 74. While Bloomquist was driving away from the field, Phillips and Francis battled for the second spot. Phillips used a slower car to pick Francis, taking second in turn four. Francis and Charlie Randolph made contact as Phillips drove by. Randolph cut a tire, pulling up on the backstretch on lap 80, bringing out the races's final caution.
Moyer improved past Francis for third on the restart, then went to work on Phillips for second. As that pair raced for position, Bloomquist drove away, opening a 10 carlength lead on lap 83. Moyer secured second, past Phillips in turn four on lap 85, but Phillips was back by on the next circuit. Bloomquist contined to make tracks, and was 15 carlenghts in front by lap 88.
Moyer got by Phillips for second on lap 90, and appeared to be the fastest car, closing on Bloomquist. Steve Francis then made his final charge, going to the extreme high side of the track. Francis drove by Phillips on lap 93, then shot past Moyer in turn four on lap 96. Francis was the fastest car on the track at this point, but Bloomquist held a 15 carlength advantage.
Francis continued to close, but ran out of laps. Scott Bloomquist came home with the win, with Steve Francis, Billy Moyer, Terry Phillips, and Dan Schlieper making up the top five. Brian Birkhofer, Duke Whiseant, Dale McDowell, Rick Eckert, and Wendell Wallace rounded out the top ten.
